Ray Emanual Mattson, Radioman, First Class, U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Natsek was was listed as missing in action. When it sank in a North Atlantic Storm due to icing. Ray is honored during "Call the Roll" at the Halma-Lake Bronson American Legion Post #315 Memorial Day service. He is listed among the Tablets of the Missing at the East Coast Memorial in New York City. "Let us dedicate ourselves to the task of carrying on that those whom we honor shall not have died in vain."

was awarded the Ph.D. in Anthropology June 19, 1998, in ceremonies held at the University of Santa Cruz. She was hooded by Professor Triloki Pandey. She graduated from Mahnomen High School in 1986. She is the daughter of Ann and Tom Ryan of Mahnomen and Ray and Lori Spilde of Ponsford. Grandparents are Bill and Mable Pemberton, Hallock, and Neva Spilde, Kennedy. Katherine's doctorate is dedicated to the memory of her brother, Todd Spilde.

Kennedy, Minn. - Neva Mattson Spilde, 80, died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001, Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.
Neva Ellen Mattson was born on March 10, 1921 to Alfred and Nellie (Swenson) Mattson of Jupiter Township, near Lake Bronson.
She was baptized and confirmed in East Emmaus Lutheran Church, Lake Bronson. Neva attended and graduated from Bronson High School in 1938.
She received her teaching certificate and also her bachelor of science degree in education from Moorhead State College. Neva settled in Kennedy where she pursued her career in teaching, and eventually became elementary school principal, until retiring in 1987. She didn't retire for very long, and began working in various academic positions again for Kennedy Public Schools until 2000.
She is survived by her son, Ray (Lori) Spilde, Lake of the Woods and Mesa, Ariz.; one granddaughter, Kathy Spilde, Harvard University, Cambridge; two great grandchildren, Todd Spilde, Jr., and Candi Olson, Brooklyn Park; two sisters, Clara Olson, Lake Bronson, and Ethel Polizotto, Escondido, Calif.; two brothers, Marvin (Ruby) Mattson, Kennedy, and Harold (Helen) Mattson, Sterling, Ill.; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Nellie Mattson, two brothers, Ray Mattson and Edwin Mattson, and one grandson, Todd Spilde.
Services were 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 24, 2001, Kennedy Covenant Church, Kennedy.
Interment was in the Kennedy Covenant Church Cemetery.
Arrangements were with Amundsons Funeral HOme, Grand Forks.
