M: 13 Sep 1862 by license, Edmund Charles Matthews, by Rev. R. W. Dyer in Alberton Presbyterian Church, Alberton, PEI. The witnesses were John, George and Thomas Meggison. Edmund was born 25 Jul 1838 in New Brunswick of Scottish ancestry. He was probably born at North Esk, New Brunswick, the son of Charles Matthews, a native of Argylshire, Scotland, and his wife, Charlotte Rogers. Charles and Charlotte had nine children. Edmund C. Matthews was adult baptized 05 Aug 1866. Edmund died 13 October 1903 at Alberton.

Edmund C. Matthews was a well-known person in the early history of the town of Alberton. In the 1871 Canadian Dominion Directory, page 142 (2193), he was listed as a cooper, residence in Alberton. In 1881, Edmund Matthews, 45, Presbyterian, a trader, born in N.B., Scottish, was living in Lot 4. His wife, Mary A., was 36, Irish, Roman Catholic, born in P.E.I. Their children, all Presbyterian in religion, were Lilly, 17; Lucy A., 15; Benj. R., 11; Allair F. [sic], 5; and Charles E, 2. Mary's mother, Catherine McAlduff, 84, born in Ireland, Roman Catholic, was living with her daughter. In 1901, Edmund C. Matthews was residing on East Main Street, Alberton. He was listed as a government official, a duty that earned him $100 a year. His wife, and children Lillian C., Allen F., Edward C., Charlotte G. and Emily A. were inhabiting the home.
