After her husband's early death in the pneumonia epidemic of 1884, Maria journeyed with her family to America. They disembarked in 1887 at Quebec, Canada and traveled on to Karlstad, MN. There she and her children built a log cabin on their first homestead. They later moved by oxcart to Red River where they had relatives.
