Came to Kittson county, MN from Ontario, Canada with two young children.
Joseph Sugden and family took a homestead in Clow Township in 1880 (see below), they later moved to St. Vincent and in 1902 purchased the mill in Hallock. He brought his brother Robert to Hallock that year to help operate the mill. Unfortunately a fire destroyed the mill in 1904 and it was not fully covered by insurance. His brother Robert and family then moved on to Nebraska to homestead. Joseph purchased a farm in Granville Township where he lived out his life. Of their six children, only two left descendants. The oldest, Nellie was a schoolteacher in Kittson County before her marriage to George Ash. They farmed at St. Vincent and after George died in 1923, Nellie moved with her four children to Chicago where many descendants live today. The second oldest John moved to Cardston, Alberta where many family descendants live today. Joseph and Lizzie and three sons are buried in the Greenwood Cemetery.
Land records show him recording the homestead of 160 acres in MN on Document # 2912, Serial # MN0450_280. Meridian or Watershed: 5th; Parcel: Township 163 N, Range 49 W, Section 14.
