James Wells Sr. 1775 - 7 Sep 1875 of Langholm, Dumphriesshire, Scotland and his wife Mary 1784 - 30 Jan 1870 migrated to Alberton about 1820 [probably as a result of Highland clearances]. They were accompanied by their children, John 1800 - 23 Sep 1885, James 1807 - 24 Sep 1855, [and a relative, probably a nephew,] James 2nd, 1807 - 1875.

Three more children were born in PEI, Robert 1823 - 7 Dec 1909, Ellen 1826 - 8 Apr 1882 and George Kendall 1834 - 10 Oct 1890. If the birth dates are reasonably correct , Mary may have been a second wife or perhaps they were the children of John and Olivia. I cannot identify any children of John and Olivia.

Three of the men married Matthews sisters, daughters of Henry Matthews and Sarah/Sally Swaffin of Brixham, Devonshire, England: James married Maria (Millicent) 1816 - circa 1862, John married Betsey Olivia 1807 - 23 Sep 1885 and Robert married Elizabeth 1826 - 13 Sep 1909. [Henry and his family were possibly recruited by William Ellis as shipwrights in the lot 13 and 17 shipyards as was Charles Palmer, progenitor of the Palmers of Lot 11 and Tabusintac New Brunswick.]

It is suspected that the Matthews were Church of England as the last two

daughters, Elizabeth and Hannah were christened in Saint Eleanors.

George Percy Palmer who married Ellen was Anglican. [Olivia became

Presbyterian with her husband John but Robert, Ellen and George Kendall

joined the Church of England. This may have caused a split in the

family.] Of the four, James, Robert, Ellen and George Kendall. only

James is mentioned in the Presbyterian Records.

Question: Was William 1830 - 1909 son of James Sr.1776 - 1875 as Anna

Macdonald surmises or James 2nd 1807 - 1875. I think the latter more

likely although I have put George Kendall 1834 - 1890 as James Sr.'s

son.
