Dean Younggren grew up on a farm near the Red River where he attended the South Hill School, and later went to the Crookston A.C. where he graduated in 1939. Dean served in the Navy during World War II.

Dean was a hocky coach and referee for many years. He was an active member of the Kittson County Historical Society for 27 years, and served as President from 1986 - 2000. He was clerk of Thompson Township for 20 years, and served on the Kittson Memorial Hospital Board for 12 years.

He was a proud member of the Agassiz Swedish Heritage Society and the American Legion. He enjoyed researching family history and published the Younggren Family History Book.
