St. Anthony Falls, the only natural waterfall on the Mississippi, was seen by the explorer Father Hennepin in 1680. St. Anthony town began near the Falls in 1849, when Ard Godfrey built the first house in the area. By 1850, plans were begun to harness the power of the falls to drive the flour mills, which made the area famous. In 1872, St. Anthony merged with the nearby town of Minneapolis. The St. Anthony Falls Chapter first met August 31, 1917, at the Ard Godfrey House, now on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, our members are an active and friendly group looking forward to meeting prospective members. |
