This is the Home Page of the Swedish Genealogical Society of Minnesota (SGSM). The Swedish Genealogical Society was organized in March 1983. It is a branch of the Minnesota Genealogical Society.
Purpose:
The purpose of the Society is to assist members in their Swedish-American genealogical research by:
- Holding meetings for the instruction and encouragement of the members.
- Providing informative talks on some facet of Swedish-American genealogy.
- Helping solve individual problems with all members contributing solutions.
- Researching the more common troublesome areas.
- Publishing materials to aid research in Swedish ancestry.

- Saturday, March 20th – Swedish Genealogical Society of MN meeting from 1 until 4 p.m. at the Minnesota Genealogical Society Auditorium at 1185 Concord Street North, South St. Paul. Our guest speaker will be JoEllen Haugo, librarian with the Hennepin County Library, has worked with historic resources for many years including the last four with the Minneapolis Central Library Genealogy Collection. Not a genealogist but an enthusiastic cheerleader of genealogy and local history who enjoys discovering new resources to help genealogists. From experience, she knows many of the ways names and locations can be misspelled and also knows some tools to decipher what the correct spelling might be. She will discuss some of the resources available through public libraries and some special resources available at Minneapolis Central. Her topic will be on “Genealogy Research and Resources at Public Libraries”

- April 23rd – SGSM/ASI Beginning and Intermediate genealogists are invited to a Swedish Genealogy Workshop with instructors Dee & Ray Kleinow on Friday, April 23th from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the American Swedish Institute (ASI). This class will range from the basics of genealogy through demonstrations of computer databases, internet research and the Genline database. Complete the workshop knowing the steps needed for successful genealogical researching, the records used, how to access them, how to analyze the data found and how to continue with research. Bring a bag lunch. Required class text “Your Swedish Roots” is available in the ASI Bokhandel or at our SGSM sales table. Check with ASI for class registration fee, for ASI members and nonmembers. To register call ASI at 612/871-4907 or send questions to: ASI-Genealogy, 2600 Park Ave., Minneapolis, MN 55407.
- April 28th – May 1st - National Genealogical Society (NGS) 2010 Family History Conference at Salt Lake City, Utah. Their topic will be “Follow Your Ancestral Trail” Please visit: National Genealogical Society page for more information.
- Saturday, May 15th - The Swedish Genealogical Society of MN meeting from 1 until 4 p.m. in the Auditorium at the Minnesota Genealogical Society, 1185 Concord Street North, South St. Paul. Our guest speaker will be Lynne Blomstrand Moratzka, Director of the Gammelgården Museum since 1986 to present. She has found that learning about her Swedish heritage and sharing it with others, has been a life long pleasure. Helping with the development of Gammelgården has enriched our lives in countless ways—culturally, spiritually and socially. The world is full of wonderful, caring , and talented people; Gammelgården and the Swedish connections have underscored this lesson. Encouraging people to learn about, claim and celebrate their heritage is very rewarding! Her topic will be about the contents of the Swedish Emigrant’s Trunk.

Meeting Dates, Time and Location:
Please check the meeting times and locations carefully. We have moved to the MN Genealogical Society (MGS) location. We no longer meet at the American Swedish Institute (ASI).
Meetings are held 4 times a year.
For 2010 the dates, times and locations are:
- January 16th, 2010 1 p.m. until 4 p.m., at MGS in the Auditorium.
- March 20th, 2010 1 p.m. until 4 p.m., at MGS in the Auditorium. (Our March Annual Research Day meeting has moved to October.)
- May 15th, 2010 1 p.m. until 4 p.m., at MGS in the Auditorium.
- October 16th, 2010 9am to 4pm at MGS, Lobby, Auditorium, etc.

Membership/Contacting the Society:
Membership is open to any person interested in Swedish-American genealogy. The Swedish Genealogical Society of Minnesota does not have a membership fee. If you wish to receive the Newsletter; purchase books or clothing items;, attend a meeting, have access to the MGS Library; then there is a charge to cover expenses. This way you only pay for what you wish. Some items have a small markup which is used to purchase new resources for the SGSM Library. We recommend membership in the Minnesota Genealogical Society (MGS).

SGSM Publications:
The SGSM has several publications available for sale. These excellent resources are available through the SGSM. They are also for sale during our regular meetings at the Minnesota Genealogical Society (MGS).
Starting in January 1997, the SGSM has published a newsletter entitled "Tidningen" to subscribers. The "Tidningen" is published four times a year. Back issues are available. See Fran at our meetings.
Description of the SGSM Publications
- I. 5 - Generation Chart
A 17" x 22" genealogy chart, which folds into quarters, and can fit in a 3-ring binder. The chart has room for birth, marriage and death information for 5 generations. It also has space for the names of nine brothers and sisters.
- II. Subscription to the "Tidningen" Newsletter.
