- Saturday, January 16th , 2010 - SGSM meeting from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the Minnesota Genealogical Society Auditorium at 1185 Concord Street North, South St. Paul. Our guest speaker will be Roger McKnight, Professor and acting chair of the Scandinavian studies department at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota. In his newly published book “Severed Ties and Silenced Voices,” he presents a social history of immigrant times, encapsulated in the life histories of Lars Johnson, his wife Caroline and their nearest neighbors. The story bridges the Old World and the New World experience through an account of culture assimilation, broken relationships, family tragedy and the search for personal fulfillment in difficult times.
