On 23 Jun 1877, the Katie May, a steamer returning from Guild's Point, had it's boiler explode. Of the five on board, three died immediately and the other two were severely injured. Those who died were: James Mitchell, captain; Albert Seamons, painter; and Charles Stoddard, engineer. The two who were injured were Edgar Seamons, a brother to Albert and Howard Trumbull, the pilot. The ship was owned by Captain Charles May of Excelsior and Captain Mitchell was his son-in-law.
