The French explorer Pierre LeSueur (p1, p2) was in the area around 1694 but civilian settlement was sparse here until the 1840s.

The area known today as Washington County, Minnesota was originally organized as part of the Wisconsin Territory 1836-1849.

Washington County was one of the nine original counties created in the new Minnesota Territory organized in 1849 .

Washington County was officially established October 27, 1849 and was named for George Washington, first President of the United States.

It was here in Washington County that the state of Minnesota had its beginning. Minnesota became the 32nd state on May 11, 1858.

In March and April 1996, a group of genealogists organized the KentuckyGenWeb Project. The idea was to provide a single entry point for genealogy data and research for all counties in Kentucky. Volunteers were found who were willing to coordinate the collection of databases and generally oversee the contents of the web pages for each county in Kentucky. As the Kentucky project neared completion it was decided to create a similar set of pages for all states, establishing the USGenWeb Project. The MNGenWeb is part of the USGenWeb Project.
