KEHN HISTORY AND TRADITION

August Kehn was born in Germany.  That portion of the country was then referred to as Prussia.  He had some connection with the city of Duesseldorf, but what happened there we do not know for sure.  His birth date was October 18, 1833.  He arrived in America before 1860 and referred to Randolph County, Illinois, just down the Mississippi River from St. Louis about seventy miles as his place of residence when he was married on March 27, 1860, at St. Louis, Missouri, by the Justice of the Peace, to Bertha Frieda Rieke, who was born February 14, 1843, according to tradition in Hannover, Germany.  After their marriage tradition has it that the Kehns loaded all their possessions on an open wagon and drove a team of mules from Illinois to a new home in Minnesota.  For many years the Kehn family lived just south of the old  Hanover bridge which is now closed to vehicle traffic.  The farm was located in Section 1 of Greenwood Township, Hennepin County, Minnesota.  August Kehn was called butcher because he helped many of the farmers with butchering.  Bertha died June 16, 1907, at her home and is buried in the front row of Salem Lutheran Church Many of the Kehn children, grandchildren, and later generations were baptized and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church.
