RAINS, at Savanah. ekapphah@ix.netcom.com (10/13/96) Researching Gallant Rains who was listed as the designer &
builder of the Andrew Co.,MO courthouse in 1841. He came west
to Calif in early 1850s bringing his family including
"daughters" Martha & Marietta. Marietta was my gr-gr-gr
grandmother. Her death cert listed her birth on 3 Aug 1842 in
MO and that her mother was Josie Martin. Since Gallant was
married in 1822 to Louisiana Burns and was still married to her
when he died in 1883 and census records do not list these girls
as living with Gallant, the question is, who do these
daughters belong to? Some of Gallant's other children also have
the name "Martin" as their surname in early censuses and later
changed to Rains.

SMITH (James Lowery and Elmira MILAM) JLSmith & wife lived in Platte Twp. from 1840's to 1890's. Todd D. Moberly (Apr 30, 1998) I am attempting to research my Smith line through the family of an uncle, James Lowery Smith. James Lowery Smith was born 15 Nov., 1812, somewhere in Virginia; he traveled to Kentucky with his parents probably in the late 1810's and migrated to Mo. ca. 1842. He married Elmira MILEHAM / MILAM in 1842, Independence, Mo. He had a large family including a son John Barrett Smith, a bachelor son Richard Smith, and others. I am hoping descendants from Andrew County and beyond may have done research on this elusive family. According to the granddaughter of James Lowery Smith (1954), James Lowery Smith was the son of John Smith and Nancy HARRIS. This John Smith was still living in 1860, age 89 (Estill Co., KY census, living with daughter Mary BARRETT, wife of John H. Barrett. James Lowery Smith had brothers Albert, Wm, and sisters Sally STRONG, Susan BOWLING, and Betsy JEFFRIES. Any help appeciated!
