B. F. Carney closed a very successful term of school at the
Carney school house the 23rd. Frank is a nice young man and he
showed the people that he was a school teacher. Success to
him.
In November, 1984, on one our
family Thanksgiving treks, my brother-in-law, Bob Dooley, led us
on a family cemetery tour. I was unaware of his interest and had
not yet gotten the genealogy bug, but I dutifully, as family
photographer, took pictures. I am so glad now that I did.
Somehow, we found the road to the cemetery - actually, I think
Bob drove right to it. I remember seeing the "Old Carney
Cemetery" sign on my right as we pulled up. On our left,
back off the road, was an old church or school house. Roy and
Bob, being the intrepid explorers they were, had to check out the
old building first - with me following along with the camera.
After their curiosity was satisfied, we turned to go into the
cemetery.
As we crossed the road and approached the gate, the gate swung
open, as if we were being welcomed. We spent a couple of the most
peaceful, pleasant hours roaming through the cemetery, taking
pictures. To this day, I remember our amazement when that gate
swung open all by itself. We talked about it for years. Roy and I
intend to re-visit this special cemetery.
My brother-in-law, Bob, passed away in 1998. Any research or
documents he might have had are no longer available, so I'm
glad I was a photo taking fool back then. I only wish I had
recognized the importance of documenting and labeling pictures
(the only thing I had written on the back was the year).
