Hazel Dell School
Barry County, Missouri

According to Carl Montgomery,  "Hazel Dell School was located approximately five miles northwest of Exeter, Mo.  The building was moved to the Exeter School grounds in the 1960's but I believe it is no longer there."

Carl's father Samuel Marvel Montgomery and his uncle Harris Montgomery are among the students pictured below as noted. Carl thinks that the small boy on the left in the first row is a McNabb.  Carl can not identify anyone else in the photo.

If you recognize any of the other students please email Carl Montgomery

 HAZEL DELL SCHOOL INFORMATION

Don Collins said that while he was visiting the Barry County, MO site and came across the 1904 school picture of Hazel Dell that Carl Montgomery submitted.

Don added that this school was located on or near the property of James Dickey Wooten.  Living with James, at this time, were four of his grandchildren. Their mother Lenora Lauderdale Wooten died in 1902 and their father, William T. Wooten, died in 1903, both from TB.

With information that Don Collins has along with a photo of the children and their parents that was taken in 1902, he was able to put together the names of four children who are in the Hazel Dell school photo of 1904.

The oldest boy, Claude Fredrick Wooten was 13 years old. I believe he is standing in the back row, fourth from the right. The next child is Mabel Ophelia Wooten and she was 10 years old. She is located in the 3rd row, sixth from the right. The next child is Charles George Wooten. He was 7 years of age and I believe he is the boy holding the chalkboard in the front row. The youngest child of the family is Emma Grace Wooten. She is 5 years old at the time. She is the little blond-headed girl in the front row.

To the right is the family photo that Don used to help identify these four children.

Mabel Ophelia Wooten was his great grandmother. She married William Edward Prewitt in 1909. She died June 5, 1918 of TB. Emma Grace Wooten later married Auburn McNabb. And Claude Frederick Wooten married Mamie Pearl Wells in 1911.

Photo submitted and information was the courtesy of Don Collins
