WWI Dan R. Meador
Headline Dan Meador Writes From France
Text - Outline Mr. F. A. Meador,
Cassville, Mo.

Dear Fred: I received the CASSVILLE REPUBLICAN dated August 22nd this week.

We had a safe and uneventful trip throughout a wonderful trip. Our trip across the States was grand. We were on the ocean several days, and had a long trip across England on one of their passenger trains and then a long trip in France in a box car, or troop car. The car had siding windows for ventilation and accommodates from 35 to 60 men. I judge they have been used for troop transportation for many years.

We are quartered in a village in France in the grape growing region in the foot hills. It is just like a village of the medieval ages. We are billeted in houses and barns in the village. The buildings are concrete, stone or brick with tiled roofs. The farms are just a little strip on the hill sides. Wheat, grapes, gardens and grass are the principal crops. There is no corn grown here.

We have had a wonderful trip. I would like to have a few weeks of freedom to get over some of the country. Blackberries and English walnuts are abundant. We get out on Sunday and get a feast.

I regret very much that I haven't a little Kodak to get pictures of the buildings, the people the chateaus, walls, etc. They are a peculiarity of the country. The people are fine and do everything they can for us. The grapes are just now being harvested. Everything here is done in a primitive way.

We are hearing some good news from the front. Here is hoping that it will soon be judiciously settled.

My address is Pvt. Dan R. Meador,
Battery D. 339 F. A. U. S.
A. P. O. No. 723, A. E. F. France.

Best wishes to all.
Your cousin, Dan
