SSW: Caldonia J. - Research Note: Josephus Rogers died at his home in the Cross Hollows locality November 24, 1918, of malaria fever, at the age of 45 years, 1 month and 9 days. He had been sick for several weeks. Sampson Walter Josephus Rogers, was born Oct. 15, 1873 in Barry county, Missouri. When but a child with his parents he moved to Carroll county, Arkansas. At the age of 15 he professed faith in Christ and united with the Baptist church at New Home, Arkansas and had been a faithful servant in the work of the Lord since. At the age of 23 he was united in marriage to Miss Caldona Jane Riddle of near Butterfield. To this union were born five children, four of who are living. The oldest child Fredia R. Rogers died May 18, 1897. Josephus Rogers' body was conveyed to the Arnhart cemetery near Purdy, November 25, 1918 to await the resurrection morn. Research Note: Her stone reads 1915 but the newspaper dates her death in 1916. June 29, 1916, Thursday, Cassville Republican - East Purdy News: Mrs. Jemima Smith, an old and respected citizen of this place passed away at the home of her son, Jesse Smith, at Monett, June 21. She was 74 years and 9 months old and was the wife of Jas. Smith and the mother of 12 children, 8 of the 12 having preceded her to that home above. The four children living are Jesse Smith of Monett, James and Jack Smith and Mrs. M. Henson of near Purdy. Funeral services were held at the Arnhart church Thursday and the body was laid to rest in the Arnhart cemetery. The bereaved have our sincere sympathy. Research Note: Dora E. Steverson, age 66, of Cassville, died February 11 at Northwest Medical Center in Springdale, Arkansas. She was born December 19, 1934, in Navoo, and was a daughter of George F. and Clara E. (Clifton) Garrison. She attended school in Purdy. From 1969 to 1970 she owned and operated Cassville Florist and she purchased Cassville Smith Florist in 1970 which her family owned and operated for 31 years. She was a lifelong Barry County resident and was a member of the First Christian Church, Ozark Floral Association, and Cassville Chamber of Commerce. She married Chester L. Steverson, and he preceded her in death. Survivors include four daughters, three brothers, two sisters, eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Daniel Garrison and Dewey Garrison; and one sister, Doris Moore. Resource: Monett Times, Feb. 13, 2001 |
