Research Note: He was a son of William and Bridget (Murphy) Brown, both born Old Pendleton District, SC. Married Rebeckah Poindexter Jones 19 Jun 1836 in St. Francois Co., MO. Murphy and his son Ezekiel were murdered by a Union sympathizer and neighbor while on their way to the blacksmith shop - wife and mother Rebeckah and her older children buried them in a common grave. Stone likely placed when she returned from Texas after the War.

She is survived by two brothers Thomas Chitwood of Neosho, Mo., and George W. Chitwood of Pueblo, Colorado, a host of nephews and nieces and friends. One brother, Richard Chitwood preceded her in death.
