Barry Co., MO
SSW: S. L. - Research Note: Cassville Republican, March 30, 1893 - Daniel Deacon Bayless was born Oct. 6, 1821, in Washington Co., Tenn., where he was reared on a farm. His father died when he was a small boy. About 1849, he married Sarah Bruner of Greene Co., Tenn., who now survives him, though an invalid for many years during her life. In 1852 he with many others, constructed flat boats and floated down the Tennessee river to Cairo and moved from there to Benton Co., Ark., by wagon, being abut eight months on the journey. Some four years later he bought a farm about one mile north of where Seligman is now located. All his property was gone at the close of the Civil War, in which he took no part and was one of the few men permitted to remain at home during that trying period. He was industrious and straight in his dealing and before leaving the farm in 1889 to come to Cassville, had accumulated a comfortable store for the wintry years. He was at one time a silent partner in the mercantile business at Washburn, also at Cassville and was a stockholder and director in the Barry County Bank from its organization in 1886. He was the father of six boys and two girls. The three younger of the former and the older of the latter died in early youth leaving William K., John M., James M. Bayless and Mrs. Carrie M. Allen, who are residents of Barry County. - Another Photo Online Obit

DAVIDSON, Marshall Ray Jan. 25, 1922 Feb. 26, 1944 Inscription: "TM3 US NAVY WORLD WAR II PURPLE HEART" - Research Note: Phyllis' Note: This is a memorial stone, erected by his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. C. S. Rose. Ray served in the Navy on a submarine and went down with his ship. He married Gusta Patterson, daughter of Charles Lewis Patterson and Anna Ella Pendergraft. Gusta remarried and is buried in Joplin. Grandson of Judge Elijah William Davis. - Davidson who attended high school at Wheaton and Washburn, was 22 when he went MIA. He left behind a wife, Gusta Patterson, and a 2-year-old son. As a torpedo man on the Grayback, Davidson was among the 80 serviceman who were reported as missing in action. His parents, Ewing and Nota (Davis) Davidson, of Garfield, AR, received word of his MIA status on Easter morning of that year. On Feb. 25, 1944, Garyback was directed to end her 10th war patrol and return to Midway Island. The following day, a Japanese aircraft flying south of Okinawa spotted a surfaced submarine and scored a direct hit on the vessel. The submarine reportedly exploded and sank. Based on information that the Grayback started home from the East China Sea on Feb. 25, 1944, the U.S. submarine would have been in the area where the enemy attack occurred. The Grayback and her men never returned from their 10th war patrol, and the submarine was listed as "lost at sea" on Feb. 27, 1944. - Another Photo - Inscription: "RAY DAVIDSON - USS GRAYBACK ON ETERNAL PATROL" Note

DAVIS, Jacob S. Apr. 16, 1856 1938 Research Note: He was a son of Oliver and Mary Almeda (Inman) Davis. - Newspaper Obit on ancestry.com - Had Been a Member of Barry County Bar For More Than Fifty-one Years. J. S. (Jake) Davis, a member of the Barry Co. bar for fifty-one years, passed away at the home of his nephew, Roger Davis, at Washburn, Monday night, July 4th, at the age of 81 years. Mr. Davis had been in failing health for the past few years, but until about two years ago he had continued to look after his professional business. He had failed rapidly during the past year. His home had been in Barry Co. since he was a small boy. His entire long legal career was in the courts of Barry and adjoining counties. Coming to Cassville in January 1895 soon after he had been elected Prosecuting Attorney for the first time, Cassville had since been his home. J. S. Davis was born in Parker Co., TX, Apr. 16, 1857. With his father's family, his father being dead, he came to the Shoal Creek-Corsicana community, Barry Co., in 1865, when he was a lad of eight years. He would often talk of the hardships which he and the other members of his family endured during those years immediately following the Civil War. When a young man he studied at the Marble Academy in Madison Co., AR, and later at the Marionville College. Deciding upon the law as his life work, he entered the University of Missouri law school, from which he was graduated in the spring of 1887. He was soon thereafter admitted to the bar and located in his home county for the practice of his profession, locating first at Washburn. He had served the county as Prosecuting Attorney at different times with a good record for competent service. He had never married. He is the last of the family of his father and mother to pass away. Funeral services are being held this afternoon, July 7th, in the Community Building in Cassville. Members of the Barry Co. bar are taking a leading part in the service. Burial will be in the Roller (King) cemetery south of Washburn, with the Horine-Culver Undertakers in charge. He was a member of a family of eight children, and the last of the family to pass away. One child died when young. He had two sisters, Mrs. Nancy Ennis, wife of the late William Ennis, and Mrs. Mary Platen. His four brothers were long prominent citizens of the county: Bert Davis, Henry Davis, Prof. Will Davis, and Oliver D. Davis. He is survived by a number of nephews and nieces who were very much devoted to him, as he had always taken a fatherly interest in them. His body was brought to the Community Building at 12:30 to lied in state until the funeral hour. - Another Photo Obit
