Keeling, old and highly respected citizens of this county. She was married to Chester Higgs Dec. 31, 1927. She is survived by her husband Chester Higgs, her father and mother, one brother, Eugene Keeling, two sisters Goldie and Lorene, also a large number of relative and a host of friends. The beautiful floral offerings were carried by Mrs. O. L. Burger, Mrs. Olen Kimbrough, Misses Willodean Taylor, Geneva Talbert, Juanita Johnson and Beth Florey. He was accepted as an aviation cadet and entered navigator training at Harlingen Air Force Base, Texas. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in August 1960. After attending Radar Intercept Officer School and serving with the 2nd Fighter Intercept Squadron, Long Island, New York, LT. COL. Higgs was selected for pilot training and received his pilot wings at Williams Air Force Base, Arizona in 1964. His military decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal and the Outstanding Unit Award. Higgs, 14, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jess (Mary Tucker) Higgs of near Wheaton passed away at the Barry County Hospital following an attack of appendicitis which caused a rupture and prevented an operation Saturday, March 6. Grace Higgs was a young girl of most pleasing personality and her passing will be a loss to the people of the community who learned to love and admire her for the youthful consideration and thought for others. She was converted and united with the Solid Rock Baptist Church at the age of twelve years and lived a devoted Christian life and took an active part in religious work. She was a granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Harve (Frances Baker) Higgs. Pallbearers were: George Tucker, Carl Davidson, Eugene Jones, Gene Barrett, J. O. Kimbrough, and Junior Higgs. Hugh Monroe Higgs, age 88 years, died December 13th, 2001 in Cassville, Missouri after a long illness. Hugh, the son of the late George Harvey and Elisabelle (Baker) Higgs was born May 2nd, 1913 in Wheaton, Missouri. One of nine children, Hugh is survived by one brother, Junior Harvey Higgs, of Exeter, Missouri. Hugh was united in marriage to Miss Hazel Margaret Erwin, daughter of the late Judge and Ora Erwin on June 4th, 1932. Hugh and Hazel lived in Barry County most of their married lives and settled in Exeter, Missouri in 1948. This coming June would have marked their 70th wedding anniversary. To this union four children were born, three sons and one daughter. Fred Harvey, died at five days of age, Hugh Darrell of Exeter, Missouri, Franklin Delano of Valley Center, Kansas, and Martha Jane of Springfield, Missouri. Ten grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren also survive him. One grandchild, Sherry Jane Burd, preceded him in death. Hugh was saved on October 11th, 1932 and later answered Godís call to preach the Gospel, being ordained on the 1st day of August 1948 by his peers at Calvary Baptist Church of Exeter, Missouri in which he was a member. - Photo of Hugh and siblings Headstone

SSW: Chester Oliver "Buck" Higgs - Research Note: She was the daughter of Josie (Gailey) Granger and John Sanford Granger. Most of Ruth's schooling was in Rocky Comfort, Missouri, but the family moved to Joplin during her senior year and she graduated from Joplin High School. She attended Northeastern State Teacher's College in Tahlequah, Oklahoma and taught school in Rocky Comfort. She also worked at Christmans' (Macy's) Department Store in Joplin for 34 years. On July 1, 1946, she married Larry "Red" Miller and they resided in Monett, Missouri. She was active in Monett's civic affairs, assisted in taking the 1950 census, was a clerk in all the elections and was treasurer of Larry's Railroad Engineer's Union. Upon Larry's death, she returned to Business College in Joplin and then she met another red head, Chester "Buck" Higgs. They were married June 2, 1962, and together they ran a cattle farm near Wheaton, Missouri. Ruth enjoyed being around people and because of that she accepted a job at Fanning's Department Store in Cassville and stayed on when it became Smith's Department Store. Ruth and Buck were active members of the new Hope Baptist Church near Wheaton and because of her love of music, she was the church pianist for decades. She served as election clerk for many elections, was a member of the Wheaton Senior Citizens and assisted in the 1970 census in that area. She was preceded in death by her father; mother; two brothers, Hubert and Virgil; her husband, Buck, as well as her stepson, Joe Higgs, who she loved like her own son. Headstone

Research Note: Civil War Veteran: Sgt. Co. I, 10th NJ Infantry. Served from Dec. 1, 1861 to Nov. 30, 1864. - November 18, 1915, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Passes Away: George A. Hiles, a well known and highly respected citizen of Exeter passed away Thursday morning, Nov. 11, at the age of 71 years. Death resulted from a tumor. Mr. Hiles was born in Philadelphia in 1844. After coming to Missouri he located in Lawrence County and moved to Exeter in May 1898 where he had since lived. When the call of his country was made during the great civil struggle from 1861 to 1865,he answered and gave the best years of his life in its service. Old soldiers of the Civil War were pallbearers at his funeral. He leaves a widow and five children, three sons and two daughters. The sons are Winn of Exeter, George of Nebraska and Fred of Kansas. The daughters are Miss Hattie, at home, Mrs. Lottie Haynes of Claremore, Okla. The funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Torbitt of Springfield and interment made in the Maple Wood Cemetery at Exeter. George A. Hiles was an excellent citizen, held in highest esteem by a large circle of friends and was a devout believer in the religious teachings of the Christian Science Church. The citizens of Exeter where he has lived for more than a quarter of a century will feel his loss. - He was married with no occupation. His father is listed as "Alexander Hiles, don't know for sure". Mother not named. The cause of death has some kind of abdominal ????. He was a Christian Scientist. W. C. Hiles of Exeter, MO was the informant. - George A. Hiles married Mary E. Inscription: "MISSOURI SEAMAN US NAVY" - Research Note: He was a son of George A. Hiles and Mary E. Chamberlain. - Cassville Republican, July 1, 1937 - W.C. (Winn) Hiles, who lived at Exeter when he was a young man, died Friday at his home at Gordon, Ark. He died suddenly. Winn, as his many friends here about his old home knew him, was here on a visit, nearly every year with his mother, Mrs. Mary Hiles who died a few months ago at Exeter, and his sister, Miss Hattie Hiles, who had lately been at Gordon with her brother. Mr. Hiles had been sick for sometime. His two sisters, Mrs. Lottie Haynes of California, and Miss Hattie Hiles were with him during his illness. They and Mr. Haynes accompanied his body back to Exeter for the funeral and burial. The Funeral services were conducted by Mrs. Claude Miller of Monett, a Christian Scientist. The Hiles family are of the Christian Science faith. Burial was in the Maplewood cemetery at Exeter. The Christian Science service was given. Pall bearers were: John Ellston, Earl Smithson, A.L. Walker, John Hughes, A.D. Taylor, and Jess Walker. Surviving him are his widow, one daughter, and two sisters Mrs. Lottie Haynes and Miss Hattie Hiles. - Winfield C. Hiles, age 31, married Nora V. McCary. - November 3, 1917, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - Loren Hodge of near Exeter, has entered Rahe's Auto and Tractor School in Kansas City, where he will take a thorough technical and mechanical course in automobile and tractor engineering. After graduating, he will open a garage at Washburn. - November 10, 1917, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - Loren Hodge is not attending the tractor school in Kansas City, with an idea of opening a auto garage at Washburn, he writes. He says that he will remain on the farm during these troublesome times and do his bit to help feed the soldier at the front. - Cassville Republican, Thursday, Sept. 12, 1918 - To Mechanical School: Joe Randall and Loren Hodge will go to the Mississippi Agricultural College to enter school for mechanics training for the military service on September 19. The call may require more men than these two from this county. The local board has not yet been informed. Randall and Hodge volunteered for the service. She was a lifelong Exeter resident, and U.S. Postmaster for 35 years, having served in Stella, Exeter and Galena. She was a member of the Exeter City Council for several terms and served five 2-year terms as Mayor of Exeter, being the first woman to do so. She was instrumental in many improvements for the community of Exeter, including obtaining the storm warning system, flashing lights for the school crossing on Highway 76/86, the caboose for Main Street, and the Tree City designation. She was the first woman member of the Exeter Lions Club and served as Chaplain of that organization, and was an honorary member of the Exeter FFA. She was a past member of the V.F.W. in Cassville and current member of the V.F.W. in Jane. She was an active member of the Republican party, having served as Committeewoman for several years. During her life, she taught Sunday School and was a member of the church choir for several years, and a current member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Cassville. She married Calvin A. Hopkins on Nov. 30, 1945, in Bentonville, Ark. He preceded her in death on Nov. 6, 1985. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers. White Funeral Home

Cause of death was gun shot in bowels. - He was the son of John Alexander Howerton and Mary A. Stephens. There are several articles about Pharis' death on ancestry.com. Pharis was shot by his father, some thought it was murder. Pharis lived a few hours after the shooting and stated that it was accidental. Never the less, his father was charged with the murder and died before going to trial. His parents are buried at Clark Cemetery. The news items say Pharis is buried at Clark and there is a single stone there. However, there is a double stone with his wife at Maplewood Cemetery. Death Certificate

Hoyt, wife of the local M and A Depot agent, passed away in the Baptist Hospital at St. Louis last Thursday. She had been a patient in the hospital for a short time for observation and treatment and died from an internal hemorrhage. Della Nan Henley, daughter of John and Margaret Elizabeth Henley was born June 16, 1886 at Hog Eye, Okla., and departed this life Dec. 21, 1944, at the age of 58 years, 6 months and 5 days. She was united in marriage to Walter William Hoyt July 6, 1906. To this union six children were born, two sons, Walter and Oren, preceding her in death. She is survived by her husband, Walter W. Hoyt of Wheaton; two sons, Charles of Heber Springs Ark., and Maurice of Kansas City, MO; two daughters, Mrs. Chester Higgs of Purdy Route and Mrs. Guy Yates of Oak Ridge, Tenn. Ten grandchildren; one brother, Fred Henley of Le Ponto, (spelled LePanto) Ark.; one sister Mrs. Martha Letcher of Swifton, Ark., besides many other relatives and friends. SSW: Della - Research Note: Walter was the M and NA Railroad station agent in Wheaton. - Wheaton Journal - Walter William Hoyt, son of Byron Abner and Ida Mariah Hoyt (death certificate states that his mother was Margaret Cook), was born August 4, 1876, at Luddington, Mich. When he was a small child his parents moved to Missouri and later to Arkansas where he grew to manhood. He was married to Della Henley July 6, 1906. To this union were born six children, two of whom were died in early childhood. His wife preceded him in death Dec. 21, 1944. His one brother Frank Hoyt, died in 1919. He and his family moved to Wheaton in 1924 where he was employed as the local Station agent until his retirement in 1947. During the past 10 days he suffered the illness which resulted in his death in Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Friday October 13, 1950 at the age of 74 years, 2 months and 9 days. The survivors are two sons, Charles of Roxana Ill., and Maurice of Kansas City, Mo.; two daughters, Marguerite Higgs of Purdy, MO and Ida Pearl Yates of Topeka, Kan.; two half sisters Maud Turner and Mabel Chaney both of Vivian, La. and other relatives and friends. - Charles E.
