Research Note: He was widowed twice and his current wife was deceased. Son of Lewis "Tom" Mattingly and Mahala Catherine Medlin. Mrs. Trilla Clarida of Exeter, MO was the informant on the death certificate. Parkison on October 24, 1904. They had two children, Marion Lewis born August 24, 1905 and Iva Edith born February 1, 1907. Bertha passed away just 10 days after Iva's birth. Rural Exeter,
Barry Co., MO
SSW: Mahala - Research Note: He was widowed twice and a farmer. Son of James Mattingly and Lutsia Cameron (incorrect). Tilla Claraday of Exeter, MO was the informant on the death certificate. - William's notes: Lewis was living with his parents during both the 1860 and 1870 census. The 1900 census of Exeter, Barry County, Missouri finds Lewis and Mahala with seven children in the home. They are also in Exeter during 1910 with five children. The younger child was Louis M., four years of age and listed as grandson (not certain yet who his father was). Lewis and Mahala are also found in Exeter during 1920 with their son, John A. still in the home and single. The 1930 census of Exeter shows Lewis as L. and his wife as M. C. Children at home were John and Charles. There was also an E. A. Clarid, age 51, in the home and listed as a daughter but no daughter with these initials and this age have appeared before but may have been on the 1880 census. I have not found Lewis or his family during 1880 as yet. His death certificate #1651, shows he was widowed and names his spouse as Mahala. His father is named James Mattingly and mother Lutsia Cameron, which is incorrect according to census, (His parents were Lewis Mattingly and Mary Caroline Tate). Informant was Tilda Claraday (may have been his daughter Lillie) and I am not sure she had knowledge of the family. Buried at Maplewood Cemetery. Death Certificate

Inscription: "Rainbow Bridge - Cherokee Descendant" - Research Note: Wife of Joseph Clifton Miller. Daughter of James Homer Collins and Alice "Muz" Biggs. Letter from Buannah Collins Miller to grandson Michael Day: Dear Mike, Thank you so much for a very nice letter. I am amazed at your questions. Now I wish I had asked my Grandma the same questions. Unfortunately, she was gone to Heaven before I reached 13. Fountain School Dist. #80, was a one room school about 4 miles from Tonkawa, Okla. (Kay County) where I grew up. We walked 3 miles to school. We had recess the middle of the morning, at noon and then the middle of the afternoon. We got to play games then, as we didn't have gym. My favorite subject was Oklahoma History. We learned a lot about the Indians and Early Settlers. My Dad and Grandfather made the run to Oklahoma from Neosho (1880). Dad was born near Neosho [MO]. We got a new teacher every year or so. I liked them all. We played Dare Base and Baseball. I remember one of the boys hit the ball and slung the bat to run. It hit another boy across the forehead and split his head open. He was a mess. We never had much money. Didn't need it as there was nothing to buy. We carried our lunch in paper sacks and folded the sacks and carried them back home in our pockets. One close friend, on our way home from school in the fall, would get a butcher knife and we'd walk through their melon patch and eat a watermelon. They raised them to sell and by fall, there were a lot left. We raised melons, corn, tomatoes, and a lot of other produce to sell in town. Hauled it on an iron wheeled wagon. I graduated from 8th grade about 2 weeks after I was 13. They graded by ABC and F. My grades on my county exams - I didn't have a grade below 90. We weren't punished for not making good grades - as I remember. We all made good grades. We were only told to do our best. The teachers were great and real encouraging. Chores, at home, consisted of cutting wood and getting in wood to heat and cook with. Carrying water from a well. Shucking corn in the fall. Sometimes we had to cut and shook corn. We just did whatever needed done. We played in the river. Caught fish and ........ - (The rest of the letter is missing.) Mike@ancestry.com

SSW: Lois - Research Note: He was the son of Mead S. and Betha (Peen) Miller. - Cassville Republican, March 3, 1938 - COUNTY TREASURER DIES AFTER SERVING 4 MONTHS - FUNERAL WEDNESDAY - First County Official to Die in Office Since 1922. Large Crowd Attends Funeral. County Treasurer G. F. Miller died at 11:20 o'clock Tuesday morning, March 1, at the Barry County Hospital, in Cassville. He was taken suddenly and seriously ill while at his office in the courthouse two weeks or more ago. Later in the day he was taken to his home southwest of Cassville. His condition did not improve and after a few days he was brought to the hospital for an operation. The operation revealed an intestinal condition of the most critical nature, and from that time there was little hope for his recovery. Funeral services were held at 2:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. March 2, at the Baptist church in Exeter. An immense crowd attended. The services were conducted by Rev. Chas Vanzandt of Exeter, and Rev. C. F. Siler of Cassville. A quartet composed of J. L. Riddick, W.C. Blythe, Rev. H. V. Leslie, and Rev. Arch Gibson, with Mrs. Troy Wilson at the piano furnished the music. The county officials attended the services as a body. Burial was in the Maplewood cemetery at Exeter, W. D. Koon undertakers in charge. George Frank Miller was born Feb. 25, 1895, near Templeton, Tex., He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Mead Miller. When a small boy his mother died. Later Mr. Miller and his two sons, Frank and brother, came to Barry County. Frank had lived in this county since, his father and brother returning to Texas. He was married April 15, 1915 to Miss Lois Arnold, who with their three sons survives him. He is also survived by his father, one brother, two half-brothers and two half-sisters, and step-mother. He was converted when 14 years old and united with the Baptist church. Mr. Miller was a successful farmer on Washburn Prairie. He had taken an active interest in community and county affairs and was held in highest regard by a wide circle of friends. He was a congenial, upright citizen, a man of strict integrity, and a man whom everybody enjoyed meeting, on account of his pleasant, optimistic nature. His heath failed him a few years ago, but during the past year he seemed to be regaining his health. On Sept 6 last, the law restoring the office of County Treasurer went into effect, and soon thereafter Governor Stark appointed Mr. Miller as Treasurer of this county. He had served only a few months, but was making an excellent officer. Those who had business at the Treasurer's office were well pleased and appreciated the way he handled the business of his office. SSW: Homer - Research Note: She was the daughter of Arthur Frank Graham and Mary Melissa Geddes. Dolly had siblings Glenn Isaac Theodore son of Isaac J. Laager; Sybil Belle Graham; Frances Laura Graham; and Mary J. Graham. - Excerpt of notes for Dolly's mother at ancestry.com: 25 March 1910--at age 24, Mary had a daughter, Dolly Melissa Graham, in Sioux City, Iowa. 23 June 1911--at age 25, Mary had a second daughter Sybil Belle Graham, born in Sioux City, Iowa. 12 July 1912--Mary’s three oldest children, Glenn, Dolly, and Sybil, were admitted “by a sister-in-law” (unidentified) to Mooseheart Orphanage in Kane, Illinois as the 84th, 85th, and 86th “students” at that institution. Apparently, Mary, who was six months pregnant with her fourth child Frances Laurel, was extremely ill and/or incapacitated. 6 October 1914: "Mary I. Graham" was formally committed to a medical facility for the insane in Cherokee, Iowa, 60 miles northeast of Sioux City, Iowa. Cause of insanity listed as pulmonary tuberculosis. 30 July 1916--at age 30 years and 3 months, Mary Geddes died at 6:30 p.m. in the medical facility in Cherokee, Iowa. The five children of Mary Geddes remained at Mooseheart for several years. Glenn ran away December 16, 1922, at age 17, first to Aurora and eventually to Chicago, where he got a job laying flooring. Dolly and Sybil left Mooseheart together on 4 May 1923, remitted to the custody of their paternal uncle, Edward Everett Graham, of Wayne, Missouri. Dolly was 13 and Sybil was 11. Frances and Mary left the following year, on 22 May 1924, remitted to the custody of their father, Arthur F. Graham, who apparently took them to Los Angeles, California. Dolly and Sybil went to middle and high school in near by Exeter, Missouri. Ed Graham owned some land and a cannery, and the girls worked there also. After graduation, Sybil and Dolly moved to Mt Pulaski, Illinois and lived with their Aunt Flora Ellen Graham. Dolly Graham married Homer Mitchell of Cassville, Missouri. Census
