Metcalf Cemetery
Barry County, Missouri

Liberty Township
S34, T23N, R29W
South West of Ridgley, almost to the McDonald County Line.
Many years ago, it was originally located on what was the Elijah Metcalf Farm. See Section 34 of this 1909 Plat Map
Located, canvassed and researched in Spring of 2005 by Jay Trace
Go west on Hwy 76/86 for 2 miles west of the Exeter City limits sign. Turn left on Farm Road 1045 and follow that for one mile until you come to a "T", and then turn right. That will be Farm Road 2190. Stay on this road for approximately 4 miles. Turn left on Farm Road 1010. According to local residents, this is also called Bear Cave Road. Go up the hill approximately a mile and there will be a white double-wide mobile home on the right side. There are two tin outbuildings behind the house. The graves are to the left of Anthony Littleton family.

The first thing I saw was one of those little tin markers from a funeral home -
It reads: "David S. Metcalf 1933-1933."
There was a fairly large stone that reads "Metcalf" on the top, and on the front face, it said "Mary F 1858-1928 At Rest."
Sandstone with the name of Metcalf on it. Mary F. Metcalf

| Elijah James Metcalf, son of Hiram Casteel Metcalf, was born Dec 23, 1856 in Estill Co., KY, and died Jan 24, 1946 in Exeter, Barry Co., MO. He was buried in Metcalf Cemetery, Thomas Hollow, Exeter MO and he married married Mary Frances Sparks on Feb. 5, 1878 in KY. She was born May 15, 1858 in Jackson Co., KY, and died Mar. 18, 1928 in Star Hollow, McDonald Co., MO. |
I saw maybe 4 flagstones that could have been used as grave markers, and some slight sunken-in places, but that's it. I was short on sunlight and the place is pretty thick with leaves and underbrush.

Stone for Sarah A. Metcalf
Patty McWilliams shared this information below with the list mail readers:
Sarah Metcalf is buried in
a cemetery on what was at one time the land of Elisha Metcalf, my great
grandfather.
The Cemetery known as Metcalf Cemetery in Thomas Hollow was near the home of
Elisha's brother, Elijah Metcalf, married to Mary Frances Sparks.
Here is a list of those buried there as I have been able to PROVE:
Elijah James Metcalf, Dec. 23,
1856, KY - Jan. 24, 1946, Barry Co., MO
son of Hiram Casteel Metcalf (1833-1920) b. in KY died Barry Co., & Mary Ann (Gabbard)
Metcalf 1837 KY - about 1880, KY)
His wife - Mary F. (Frances) (Sparks) Metcalf b. May 15, 1858, Jackson Co., KY
Died March 18, 1928, Barry Co., d/o Daniel Crawford Sparks (KY) and Louvina
(Carter) Sparks, KY
Also buried in the Metcalf Cemetery:
Elijah & Mary's sons:
Joseph b. Oct. 9, 1894, MO
d. Feb. 7, 1896
Leonard F. Metcalf b. Feb. 25, 1897, MO
d. March 9, 1897
Grand daughter Athie Hickman (Aug. 2, 1904 - May 5, 1905)
was a daughter of Elijah & Mary's daughter Barthenia Elizabeth Metcalf who
married William Hickman in 1902
Grandson: (Oliver) Roland Phillips , b. July 2, 1925 in Washington; died June
16, 1927 Barry Co., MO
He was a son of Elijah & Marh's daughter Sarah Lilly Metcalf who married Andrew
Jackson "Jack" Phillips
Grandson: David Metcalf b. & D. March 12, 1933,
Son of Elijah & Mary's son William Tecumseh Sherman Metcalf & his wife Mary
Goldie Ware.
Nephew Walter Andrews b. May 2, 1900; d. Sept 6, 1900
was the son of Lavina Sparks & her husband John Houston Andrews
Lavina was a sister of Mary Frances (Sparks) Metcalf.
Great Grandson: Baby Hickman
I guess to be a grandchild of Barthenia & William Hickman
I have not been able to find a death certificate for a baby Hickman
As for information on Elisha & Sarah Margaret (Williams) Metcalf, they had 2
children who apparently died very young and I have no dates for. Elisha's obit
includes this statement: "He was married to Sarah Williams in 1875 (in KY). To
this union 10 children were born, four of whom preceded him in death, Anna,
Hiram, Jimmy, and Frances. He was also preceded in death by his wife. "
Jimmy apparently died before Elisha & Sarah left Kentucky to move to Missouri.
I do have a note from Howard H. Scroggins in 2000 that Susie & Frances were
twins. He also reported that "Frances died at 6 or 7 years of age and is buried
about one mile north of Bear Creek, between Stone Hollow & Thomas Hollow at what
"is now" known as the Bill Younger place, and in an earlier period as the
Elisha Metcalf place."
Jimmy is buried in Kentucky.
In the 1900 Barry County census, reported was that they have been married 23
years, have had 10 children & 7 are living. Same number of children reported in
1910 census.
I know that Mary Frances (Susie's twin) would have been born Nov. 17, 1879 and
would be the one buried (about 1885-86) as described above. I wonder if the
grave for Sarah A. Metcalf 1893-1896 could be Anna Metcalf.
