Ruth grew up and received her education at Butterfield, graduating from high school in 1939. In 1958, she and Dan moved to Redondo Beach, California. They remained there until 1962, when they moved back to Butterfield and became the owners of Brattin Grocery. For ten years she was employed as a cashier for Johnston's Hardware and Variety in Cassville. In the late seventies she was postmistress at Butterfield.
