Inscription: "Age 25 years - Dutch" - Research Note: Son of Marcus Jehu Combs and Mary Alice Tucker. - Cassville Republican, July 24, 1913 Ethel (Dutch) Combs, died at his parent's home 2 miles south of Purdy, Thursday, July 17th at 10 a.m., age 25 years, 8 months and 25 days. Several months ago at the Deaconess hospital at Springfield where he had been taken for an operation it was found that he had contracted that dreaded disease, Sarcoma. He seemingly recovered from the operation and was brought home, but the disease had a stronger hold than was hoped and he continued to grow worse. He suffered intense pain without a murmur for weeks and months, fighting with all the nerve that a human can possess to get well, but when the disease over came the will power and Dutch saw beyond a doubt that he must go, he met it calmly as he had lived, not with fear or regret, but expressed his willingness to go and told his father and mother that all was well with him. "Aunt Peggie" was not a member of any man's organization, but was a firm believer in the Christian religion. After suffering with cancer in the throat for some time, she sweetly fell asleep in Jesus. Funeral services were held by the writer, at Mount Pleasant Church amid many relatives amongst whom was Rev. He was a Civil War Veteran serving in the 12th KS Volunteer Infantry, Co. H. - Per Myrtle M. Crane Chastain, in her narrative (1944) about her father, Isaac Romine Crane: "When about seventeen years of age, he had acquired considerable reputation as a 'fiddler' and soon found himself filling dates, playing for dances. He would be gone for several days at a time, going from community to community, and during one of these periods of time when he was away, his sister Hannah was taken suddenly ill and died of a hemorrhage. In those days means of communication were very slow and difficult and my father could not be readily located. But as he was nearing home, his violin under his arm and unaware of Hannah's death, he met a funeral procession. When he learned it was his own sister's funeral he was so shocked and in such distress of mind because of his absence from home at such a time, he vowed he would never attend another dance. He kept this vow to his dying day." - Another Photo Note
