Inscription: "CO. B. 31 ILL. INF. WAS WITH JOHN A. LOGAN 16 ARMY CORPS" Research Note. His stone is broken off from the base and the top part is on the ground. It reads that he was born Jan. 1, 1826 and not in 1825 as posted. He is buried next to Margaret. The newspaper account reads: He lived in Illinois until after the Civil War. During that great civil struggle he espoused the Union cause and enlisted and served during the war with John A. Logan's command, in the 31st Illinois regiment. He received an honorable discharge at the close of the war and soon moved west, locating in Barry County on a farm three miles southwest of Cassville. Later he moved to town and had remained there until his death. Mrs. Gaskins had been twice married. Both wives are dead. He leaves five sons and four daughters: I. H. Gaskins of Exeter, Wm. Gaskins of Coffeyville, Kan., Jake, John and Seth of this city, Mrs. D. E. Trim of Guthrie, Okla., Mrs. J. L. Richardson of St. Louis, Mrs. Chas. Hutchens and Mrs. B. F. Johnson of this city.
