An abstract of the online papers reads that Reuben Lewis, a well known citizen of the Cross Hollows locality, died Thursday of softening of the brain, following an illness of about six weeks. Mr. Lewis was born in Texas, was about 67 years of age and had lived in Barry County for more than thirty years. He was a splendid citizen. Research Note: The stone reads Jan. 18, 1890 and not the 16th as posted. Also it appears to read Dec. 12, 1866 and not the 22nd as posted. Martha Ann was the daughter of Rev. William L. Truhitte (also Trewhitt and Truhite) and Martha Ann West Truhitte. She was the sister of Benjamin Truhitte and Elizabeth (Liz) Reynolds. Martha Ann was the wife of James M. Mitchell and the mother of Lily Bell (Ernest Land), Mary E. (James Patton) and Sarah (Omer Linn). Martha Ann died in 1890 from burns suffered when her dress caught on fire in the fireplace. Lily was 7 years of age, Mary was 2 Years of age and Sarah was a baby. With the help of Martha Ann's family, widower James Mitchell raised his daughters not remarrying until 40 years after Martha Ann's death. James Mitchell and one daughter Mary and husband James C. Patton are also buried in Sparks Cemetery. |

Research Note: His stone has his name as Vinson Lee and his obti has it as Vinson Leo. In abstract, it reads: Vinson Leo Nickle, age 86, of Cassville, passed away Sunday, June 1, 2008, in St. John's Hospital, Cassville. He was born Jan. 12, 1922, in Barry County, and was a son of James Walter and Allie Eunice (Davis) Nickle. He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and two brothers. He received his education and farmed in Barry County until he entered the United States Army. After his discharge from the service, he lived in Seattle, Wash., where he built automobile brakes and clutches. Barry County became his home again after his retirement. |
