Cemetery: Clay Hill
Deceased: ELLIS, Ezearul
Birth: Jul. 28, 1854
McMinn County, TN
Death: Dec. 22, 1932
Monett, Barry County, MO.
Research Note: I am puzzled by the given name Ezearul on the stone. In all the census records his name is shown as Ezekial, except for 1880, when he is registered as E. Z. Ellis. E. Z. Ellis is also the name on his death certificate. Is the inscription on the stone a mistake? Ezekial Z. Ellis was the son of Benjamin Abbott Ellis and Mary Anna Maples, who were married in McMinn County, TN., Aug.7, 1848. According to census records they came to Missouri between 1860 and 1870. E. Z. Ellis's death certificate gives his birth place as Barry County, MO., but I would feel certain that he was born in McMinn County, since the family is recorded in the census there in 1860, when he is shown to be six years old. He married Harriett Emeline Calton Sep. 19, 1875, in Barry County, and they were parents seven children according to census records.

She was conscious up to the hour of her death and gladly welcomed the home where she should depart this life, saying it would be the happiest exchange for life. Her last words were for all to be good, and at different things during her last sickness she told those around her not to weep for her but only be prepared to insure in that world where parting would be no more. She leaves two children and two grand-children to mourn her departure, who are comforted only with the thought that the final inheritance is prompted to them who hold out faithful, and the blessing to those who die in the Lord.

Between 10:00 and 11:00 O'clock his daughter Vena, missed her father and going to search for him, heard him groaning in the stable where he was found unconscious and though aid was at once called he never spoke and died the next day. From appearances it was surmised he had been foully dealt with by some one he found in the stable who was there with evil content but the doctors pronounced the cause to be apoplexy.
