His first wife, Hulda Paralee Williams, is buried in the High Cemetery in Carroll Co., AR. He was divorced from both wives at the time of his death. He was known in the area as "Uncle Tom" as were many of the older inhabitants. He owned land in Stone County and considered himself a "laplander" as his land lapped over into Barry. His name was William Thomas Hale, not Tom J., he went by his middle name as did many of his family. Donna's Note: His death certificate gives his age at death as 77 years, 9 months, and 23 days. Inscription: "Sergt. - Co A 10 IA Inf." - Research Note: The dates for Simon B. Hanna given on his death certificate match the newspaper item for H. H. Hanna. According to his death certificate he was age 86 years, 3 months and 4 days old when he died. He was teaching, an attorney and married. Susan A. Hanna, Viola, MO, was the informant. She didn't know the names of his parents or where they were born. The cause of death was acute atrophy of the liver. The newspaper reads: H. H. Hanna, one of Barry County's aged citizens, died at his home at Viola, Sunday, July 20, 1913, aged 86 years. The deceased was born in Indiana, April 16, 1827. In the year 1850 he was married to Zulina Rodney who died in 1880. They were the parents of six children. In 1896 he was married to Susan A. Willis who survives him. During his early life in Indiana he taught school and engaged in the practice of law. In the year 1862 he enlisted in the 10th Iowa Infantry, Company A, and served three years as a faithful solider in the Civil War. Early in life the professed faith in Christ and lived a faithful Christian life. He was a member of the Viola Baptist Church where he labored much for his Master. The funeral services were conducted Monday by Eld. W.R. Prier and interment made in the Viola Cemetery. A Friend. |

Research Note: She was a daughter of Earl Elliott and Agusta Laura (Schreiner) Curry. On September 15, 1940, in Blue Eye, Missouri, she was united in marriage to Willis Howard Johnson, who preceded her in death on October 20, 1987. Also preceding her in death were her parents, one brother and one sister. Jane, as most people knew her, received her elementary education at Viola and graduated from high school at Blue Eye. Her entire life was spent at Viola, where she was a long-time member of Viola Baptist Church. She had been song leader, secretary and treasurer several years at the church. |
