Eli remains a mystery. Why would
the family or whoever, place a tombstone for him unless it was a
memorial type thing? According to the descendants of Eli, he left
home and was never heard from again. The family thinks he may
have died in an Old Soldiers Home in Illinois. See the 1900
census below.

Washburn News: Mrs. Hendrix died Thursday Nov 7 at the home of
her daughter, Mrs. Walter Thomas. The funeral was preached at the
home of Rev. Wardell. She was laid to rest in the Washburn
Prairie Cemetery to await the resurrection morn.
Eli has a tombstone at Washburn Prairie Cemetery with no death
date.
Eli was in the Civil War, his widow Frances filed for his pension
in 1883 as an invalid and again in (can't read date) as a
widow.

Family stories passed down say that Eli left the family and no
one knows why.
In the 1900 census, Frances is living with their son James and
she reports herself as widowed and is in Joplin, Jasper Co.,
MO.
