Murdered in Cold Blood

BUSHWHACKER STORY:

Edward Wormington was killed by bushwhackers Oct 9, 1865, Barry County, MO. Edward was shot from ambush by bushwhackers. Edward had just returned to his home, which was located somewhere near the New Site Cemetery (west and south of Monett). The family said that he was resting on a pallet in front of the fireplace when somebody, allegedly a neighbor, slipped into the house and fatally shot him in the back. His widow, the former Elizabeth Haddock, was left with three young children and was pregnant with another. She was left with young children to raise alone and with no means of making a living. She never remarried.

NOTES:

Elizabeth (Haddock) Wormington was pregnant with Margaret when Edward Wormington was killed by bushwhackers. It is thought by researchers that Sarah Ann was born Feb of 1866, which was after her father died in Oct of 1865.

1880 Federal Population Schedules, US Census: House # 125, Barry County, MO; Elizabeth Wormington age 46, and was born in MO, and she listed her father and mother were born in MO. Children were listed as Johnathan H., age 22, born in MO; George M., age 18, born in MO; and Mary E. E., age 14, born in MO. The children listed that their father was born in MO.

Edward was a son-in-law of Charles Haddock, Jr.
