Research Note: He applied for a pension and George Masoner signed the military papers when John applied for a pension for having served in the Civil War. The record stated that George Masoner was age 60, C. J. Burnett 41 years old, Gentry County, MO on 13 Sept 1883. Elbert Masoner also signed the papers for John T. Burnett, too and he said he was 22 years old a resident of Gentry County, MO. The Burnett family came to Barry County from Gentry County around 1890 or so. John's father, Wilson Burnett, is buried in Edgerton, MO.

Research Note:  Edward Clanton enlisted at Springfield, MO, on 16 Aug 1862 in Co. L, 1st Arkansas Cavalry. The 1st Arkansas was not a traditional cavalry regiment - due to the shortage of horses, the entire regiment was seldom mounted at one time. The men of the regiment would often dress in civilian clothing to blend in with those around them to gather information. This made them the most effective counter - guerrilla fighting force in Arkansas. Edward was mustered out on 23 August 1865. Edward filed for a Civil War pension in 1890. He was described as six feet tall, and had a dark complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair. He was enrolled at the rate of $8 per month. Edward was living with his son, Benjamin Harrison, when he died.

Research Note:  Volunteer Service, Civil War. No medical records located. L. 15 Cav, MO. Pvt, 7 Reg't of enrolled Missouri Militia. Roll dated Springfield, MO, Aug 27, 1864. George Long, 5 ft and 2 1/2 inches tall, age 18, farmer, Co. G 7, complexion fair, hair dark, eyes blue, born in Missouri. Occupation farmer. Was enrolled Aug 1, 1864 and mustered out July 10, 1865. Trained at Fayetteville, Arkansas. He had two fingers missing. He was carrying a bucket of water to a dying comrade when someone shot a bucket of water out of his hand.

Research Note: According to his military record, he was 5'8" 1/2 hazel eyes, auburn hair, dark complected. David Harvey Maxwell was mustered in Sept. 1, 1861 at Medora, Jackson Co., Indiana as a Private at age 19. He was mustered out in Columbus, Indiana, at age 22 as a Master Sergeant. He married Louisa Jane Thompson in 1864 in Jackson County, Indiana. Their first two children, Curtis Grant and Agnes A. were born in Indiana. However, their third child, Sarah C. Maxwell was born 6 March 1870 in Barry County, Missouri. So David Harvey Maxwell and family must have come to Barry County in 1869-1870. David came to the Maxwell Homestead located in the Rock House Hollow area of Mineral Springs. His two brothers having purchased 120 acres in that area from the Missouri Land Company of Scotland for $360. The US Census of 1900 lists his occupation as Physician. The Goodspeed's 1888 History of Barry County, on page 127 lists Drs. Maxwell and Lankford as Physicians in Shell Knob. So, we can now place Dr. David Harvey Maxwell in Barry County in 1888.

John Maxwell served in this unit with his three sons, David Harvey Maxwell, Edward Bazil Maxwell, and his youngest son James Jefferson Maxwell who died in a Confederate Prison Camp.

Research Note: Miles was first married to Louisa Metcalf, who died about 1861. After returning from the Civil War, he married his sister- in-law, Phyletta Blanchard Metcalf in Iowa. They later moved to Bates Co., MO, before moving to the Flat Creek area of Barry County about 1881. Miles died a short time later in 1882. His widow, Phyletta, lived in Barry County another 52 years, never remarrying.

Research Note:  Discharged Sept. 12, 1864. Janetta Fetrow, his widow, drew a widow's pension. His obit gives added information about the battles he was in. It reads: "He followed the stars and stripes from Manassas to Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, also the blood trail through the seven days fight in the wilderness and to the final Appomattox and then proudly marched through Washington." - He had a cannon ball wound in the hip, which caused him much discomfort throughout his life.

GenWeb Look-up from funeral home records gives his death date as Nov. 20, 1926 with funeral on Nov. 21, 1926.
