Research Note: William Henry Day served a 12 month enlistment in B Company, Colonel Henry McCulloch's 1st Regiment TX Cavalry (Texas Mounted Rifles) CSA. The regiment was mustered into service in April 1861 and was disbanded at Ft. Mason in April 1862. In April 1862 the 1st was redesignated as the 8th TX Cavalry Battalion. William H. Day died in a cattle stampede. His widow, Mabel Doss Day was left with a large ranching operation and 117,000 dollars in debt. She became a successful rancher and was known as the Cattle Queen of Texas. She married Captain Joseph Callaway Lea who had ridden with Quantrill. He owned the land of Roswell and surrounding area. He was mayor of Roswell, New Mexico and established the New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell.
