Research Note: James' mother, Sarah was a sister to Elmira (Antle) Hadley, and Jacob Antle that also lived in Barry Co. James and family came to Barry Co. before 1860 from Adair Co. KY. James and 3 of his brothers (Samuel T, Henry, and William Jefferson) along with their cousin Oliver Antle (see Oliver's military history at this link:

He enlisted on Sept. 12, 1862 in Newton Co., MO. Henry, William J, and James along with their cousin Oliver Antle went AWOL at Hartville, Wright, Co., MO on Jan. 11, 1863. There is no further record of their military service after this date except for Oliver Antle. After the Civil War there is no known record for James Grant.
