Research Note: Monroe Logan served in Captain John Herriford's C Company. C Company was a unit of Colonel DeWitt C. Hunters' 2 MO Infantry Regiment CSA. C Company was raised at Camp Cooper, Keetsville, Barry Co., MO. On Apr. 1, 1863 the 2 Infantry Regiment was redesignated the 8 Infantry Regiment and the 8 Infantry Regiment was redesignated 11 Infantry Regiment in the winter 1864-1864. The Regiment fought in the battles of Helena. AR., Red River Campaign, Pleasant Hill, LA. and Jenkins Ferry, AR. Monroe's brother, William Greenfield Buchanan Logan, was born in Barry Co. in 1846. He served with C Company, 11 MO Infantry Regiment. He was captured at the Battle of Helena, AR. on Jul. 4, 1863 and was imprisoned in the Military Prison at Alton, Madison Co., IL. The prison was overcrowded and a smallpox epidemic broke out. It was so bad a quarantine hospital was established on Johnsons Island across the Mississippi. William G. B. Logan died on Sep. 15, 1863 of smallpox. Confederate soldiers are buried in the Confederate Cemetery, Rozier Street, North Alton, IL.
