J.A. Barnes of Golden, was in town Tuesday, and informed us of the suicide of Sigel McCullough residing 5 miles south of Viola, in Stone county, Monday, Dec. 27, by the shot gun route.

It seems he took his shot gun out of rack at his home, placed a shell in his gun and one in his coat pocket and went to an old vacant dwelling about one-half mile away and there killed himself.  It is believed he pulled the trigger off with his right hand as the left hand was powder burned, the charge entering just below his nose, ranging upward, blowing the top of his head off, producing death instantaneously.

He was about 48 years old and left a wife and children;  he owned a good farm and stood well in the community where he lived.  He had been county surveyor of Stone county and resigned the office on account of rheumatism.

It is talked that Mr. McCullough's grand-father committed suicide; that his father committed suicide in 1877, near where his son committed suicide by hanging himself with a bridle rein.

Mr. Barnes says there was no excuse for his committing suicide, as he was living happily, had not enemies, and enjoyed the respect of everybody.  It seems there is a mania for suiciding in the McCullough family, is the only reason given for this rash act.

This is actually David Seigel McCullough.  He is my ggggrandfather. The old house still stands where all the children were born.  This is also the ggggrandfather of Gary McCullough who has been missing since May 11th, 1999 and presummed dead.

David Siegel was b. 1 Mar 1861, in Dallas Co, Mo, near Buffalo.  d.27 Dec 1909 brd @ McCullough Cemetery.  mrd. Martha Jane "Mattie" Legates Denny.  She is brd at Viney Creek. like many other McCullough's David had red hair and blue eyes, very tall and also alfficted with "consumption".  Like his father, he also committed sucide.
