The woman of Missouri will be asked to show their patriotism this month by registering for service for their county. Not transcribed - Registration sites were set up all over the county and woman were at the post offices in the county to take their registrations. ***
County Court Met to Look After Road Reports -- Salary Accounts Are Allowed The County Court held a special session Monday for the purpose of making out a road report to the State Highway Commission. Heretofore the report has been made by the county clerk but the new law places the work on the court. Requisition was made to the auditor for $5,000 special road money to offset a like amount expended by the county in constructing permanent roads. The state was also asked to pay half of the $1750 expended on the bridge across Flat Creek at the Carey ford in Mountain township. T__ Yarnall and others filed a report that $525. had been raised by them for the gravelling of the Cassville and Monett road. In accordance with the news, law, the court made a levy for county purposes was 15 cents on the $100 for each year. The state levy is for 5 census for each year. The court set aside $1,850. on the expended on the state highway running from Seligman to Monett, via Washburn, Cassville, Butterfield and Purdy. B. F. Vaughn, of Ozark township, was ordered sent to the State Sanitarium at Mt. Vernon, as a county patient. Mrs. Ollie Shelton at near Eagle Rock, was adjudged insane and ordered sent to the Nevada asylum. Court ordered Bert Talbert, road overseer for Exeter township, to work the road leading from the Bridgeman place past the Claud Hessee place, known as Leonard place. Mr. Hessee is to pay one-half of the expense and furnish all the necessary. R. G. Salyer Injured R. G. Salyer was hit by a car driven by his son, Arthur, while breaking their car out of the garage Friday morning. He suffered two fractured ribs in the left side and was bruised about the face, hands and arms. Mr. Salyer was standing in the street talking to Mrs. Mollie Messer and did not notice the car. He generally stood on the steps at the entrance of the garage from where he boarded the car. Wants Divorce While the accident is regretted by Mr. Salyer's many friends all agree that it was fortunate accident that he was not more seriously injured. The first known of the accident was when Arthur noticed his father lying in front of the car. The bed of the car passed over his body. The car 2was being backed out to the garage. Suit for divorce has been instituted in the the circuit court by Sarah Packwood. General indignities are alleged in the petition. The Packwoods reside on Shoal Creek in Liberty Township and are among the county's best citizens. Mrs. Packwood was a Weatherly before marriage. The petition alleges that Mr. Packwood owns property worth $20,000. Mrs. Packwood asks that she be given half of it. Jake Davis is attorney for plaintiff. Arnold Trial Monday The preliminary examination of Ozro Arnold charged with killing Jason Whitener, at Seligman, June 30, will be held before Justice Sons, Monday, Arnold will be represented by J. W. George and James Talbert. Mrs. Horner Hurt Miss Eva Horner was seriously injured last week at Hollister, Mo., when a horse on whish she was riding, became unmanageable and threw her into a ditch. She was removed to the Y. W. C.. A. Camp, where medical aid was given her. She is reported as being improved. She is a daughter of Prof. J. Turner Horner, who is well known in this section. She is a graduate of Drury College at Springfield, and has been teaching in Oklahoma. Mosby - McClure John McClure, the gentlemanly Frisco agent at Purdy, was married Wednesday, to Mrs. Minnie Mosby. Rev. C. S. Yarborough, of Reeds, performing the ceremony. Mrs. McClure is an excellent lady and is held in the highest esteem by all who knew her. She has lived in Purdy for sometime. The groom, our old friend, John McClure, is well known throughout Barry County and is recognized by all as one of the county's best and most dependable citizens. He is a member of the excellent McClure family of this county. We had about reached the conclusion that the pleasure of writing a marriage notice for him to a good woman would never come true but it gives us pleasure to do so at this time. They will reside in Gladden property at Purdy, which was recently purchased by Mr. McClure. We join the hosts of friends of the couple in wishing them every happiness. Joins Navy Alfred Church, son of Ed Church, residing on Washburn Prairie, has joined Uncle Sam's Navy. Local News Left Over From Last Week: Mrs. Wm. Davis of Ocoma, S. D., who has been visiting her many relatives near Mano and in this city, left Tuesday morning on her return to her home. Her sister, Mrs. Preston Matlock accompanied her as far as Monett. Local News Left Over From Last Week: Illus M. Lee, of Kansas City, is visiting his mother, Mrs. Chas. M. Lee and brother, Wear Lee, for a few days. Illus is now assistant prosecuting attorney in Jackson County and is making a great record much to the satisfaction of his many friends throughout the county. Wheaton: Miss Gladys Keeling is at home from Tahlequah, Okla., where she has been attending school. Journal. Verona: Born to Mr. and Mrs. Homer Black of Pleasant Ridge, June 28, a son. Verona: J. A. Berry of Aurora, has been arrested on a charge of selling 25 chickens to J. F. Pennell, a merchant at Verona. The chickens were stolen from Thos. Whitney and Albert Oglesby. Berry claimed to have bought the chickens from some boys. He was fined in Aurora city court and afterwards a state warrant was sworn out and Berry was taken to Mt. Vernon Jail. Advocate. Washburn And Greasy Creek Mixups: We omitted to mention last week that George C. Gulles and Miss Elsie Keasler were married by Esquire W. R. Scott on the evening of the 3rd. Washburn And Greasy Creek Mixups: Three Skelton key men entered Hilton's Store Sunday morning about 1 o'clock and got a revolver and some pocket knives then attempted to open Osborn's store door and when they made a noise that attracted Mr. Osborn's attention he went to the door the fellow fired a shot from a revolver and fled. Two others had entered Park's barber shop when they secured a razor, when the three ran south. They were strangers as Mr. Osborn could see in the moonlight and if they had been acquainted they would not have tried to enter a store where a family sleeps, or a barber shop for the purpose of stealing something of value. Independence: Mrs. Emmett Ellis came in last week from New Mexico, to visit her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Packwood. Independence: Miss Lizzie Sallee has been very sick for the last two weeks, but is better now. Washburn Prairie: Mrs. Mary Herron and daughter, Naomia Allen and baby of Tecumseh, Okla., came in Monday morning to visit their father, Wm. Varner and other relatives. Local And Personal: Born to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hessee of Republic, July 7, a daughter. Local And Personal: Earnest Wallen of Kings Prairie township, was here Monday and said that section had been visited by several good rains recently. Local And Personal: Mrs. Annette Hanks returned to Kansas City, Saturday night after visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lon Frost and family near this city. Local And Personal: Buck Kring assaulted Burl Reed Saturday night and was rewarded with a good trouncing. Local And Personal: Sherman Carlin has moved his stock of goods from Jenkins to Granby. They were formerly in business at Purdy. Local And Personal: J. W. Wright and family Texas, visited Mrs. Jason Whitener and family, of Seligman, last week. Mrs. Wright is a daughter of the late Stephen Burnett. Local And Personal: Dr. W. T. Bailey who has been accepted in the medical corp. of the United States Army and commissioned as a lieutenant asks all who are indebted to him to settle the account within the next thirty days as he expects to be called to the colors. Local And Personal: Ed Bennett residing in the Forest Grove neighborhood, has received a letter from his son Arthur who is serving in the U.S. Marine Service and informed his parents that he was stationed in San Domingo. He had purchased $150. worth of Liberty Bonds, proving his patriotism two ways. Success to Arthur. Local And Personal: Judge Shumate and Chas. Haddock, county assessor, went to Jefferson City, Tuesday night to attend a meeting of the State Tax Commission. We understand the object of the meeting is to arrange for an equable? adjustment of taxes over the state. Each county in the state was expected to be represented in this meeting. Local And Personal: The Times records the marriage of Ralph Hollenbeck of Monett, and Miss Eleanor Thomas of Newtonia, by Rev. J. F. King, in Monett, July. The bride is the daughter of Ex Sheriff Chas. Thomas, formerly of this county, and a sister of Mesdames Hugh Brixey and Morton Meader of Washburn Prairie. The groom is a jeweler in his home town. Local And Personal: Saturday evening as Ira Hemphill, John Martin and others of McDowell, were motoring to this city, with Ira's son driving and when coming down the hill near Leban Barcus residence, the car ran into Houston Bradley's buggy turning it over. One Wheel, the fifth wheel and a basket of eggs were broken. We understand the matter has been adjusted by Ira make the buggy as good as it was and paying for the eggs. The brakes on the car were not working as they should.
