Train Kills Mrs. Hickey

Sad Accident Occurred in St. Louis - Was Daughter of Late Taylor McGlothlin

The remains of Mrs. S. F. Hickey, who was killed by a fast passenger train in St. Louis, Wednesday, were brought to Washburn and laid to rest in the Washburn Prairie Cemetery, Thursday.

Mrs. Hickey leaves besides her husband three children, one son and two daughters, T. H. Hickey and Mrs.. Wm. Curly and Mrs. John Hembolt of St. Louis.

She is a daughter of the late Taylor McGlothin, an old and highly respected citizen around Washburn during life. She was a sister of Charlie McGlothlin. Mr. Hickey is a brother of Thos. Hickey resident northwest o f Washburn. The bereaved relatives have the sympathy of the many friends in their bereavement. Irvin Whitaker.

Made Corporal

Lester Hanes, who is a member of Co. E., of the National Guard, came down from Sarcoxie and spent Sunday here with his father, J. B. Hanes and many friends. He has been made a corporal in the company.

The Sarcoxie people are treating the boys fine, according to Lester. He says they are being taken right into the homes and given proper care.

Choked to Death

The 1 year old child of Mr. and Mrs. John Weaver, of near Butterfield, choked to death on a piece of apple, Saturday, Aug 11. Funeral services were conducted by Revs. Goodnight and Combs of New Church, west of Butterfield, and the remains were laid to rest there, Sunday.

Ralph Roller Rejected

Ralph, son of Mr. and Mrs. D. D. Roller, who is at Henryetta, Okla., was rejected on his physical examination under the draft law. Ralph is having a hard time. He tried to get into the officers' reserve corp. but was rejected.

Buy Kendall Farm

George Hilton and his son-in-law Erne Cox, have purchased Duke Kendall's farm on Flat Creek, 2 miles east of McDowell, consisting of 421 acres for a consideration of $6,875. Part of his land is rough but is fine pasture land. Mr. Hilton will utilized the pasture land.

James Baxter Dies

James Baxter, age about 72 years, died August 11, of infirmities of old age, at the county farm, where he has been an inmate for sometime.

The remains were taken to his former home near Jenkins for burial, Sunday.

Depot Safe Blown

The safe in the Frisco depot at Exeter, was blown during the night of August 10. Only forty-four cents in pennies was secured by the burglars. The safe was entirely destroyed.

It is reported that Babe Rosenberry's grocery store was burglarized on the night of the 9th.

Floyd Haney Married

Floyd Haney came in from Kansas last week with Mrs. Haney and spent a day at the reunion before leaving for Eagle Rock, for a visit to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Haney.

Floyd was recently married to a young lady in Kansas and brought her down for a visit to his parents and many friends in the this section. She is a daughter of the man for whom he has been working. He is an excellent young man and his many friends wish them every possible success.

Wm. Arnhart Dies

Wm. Arnhart, age 36 years and a miner, died Monday morning, at his home in Duenweg, of tuberculosis. He went to Jasper county from Lawrence County twelve years ago. He was buried Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Arnhart was related to the Arnhart family of this county.

Criminal Assault

George Webb was arrested Tuesday morning at 1 o'clock by Deputy Sheriff John Bowman, on a charge of criminal assault on a girl about 12 years of age. Webb made his escape from the Reunion last week leaving the girl and was arrested 4 miles east of Purdy. He had been in hiding. He will be given a preliminary before Squire H. P. Sons, today, Saturday. He was planning to leave Tuesday night for Tennessee after receiving his pension papers and settlement or a strawberry crop.

The Republican records the marriage in Springfield, Tuesday of J. T. Cargile of near Washburn and Mrs. E. L. Williams of Springfield, by the Rev. W. G. Pike.

Several from here attended the all day meeting at New Church, Sunday. Rev. F. Goodnight preached.

Charley Long of Purdy spent Sunday in our midst.

Aunt Catharine Schiuss is reported to be very low at this writing.

John Gautney has been harvesting hay near Granby, for the last two weeks. Mr. Gautney is one of our progressive farmers.

Gunter school is progressing nicely under the management of Prof. D. H. Truhitte and Miss Mary Crane.

We understand that Rev. D. H. Truhitte wills tart a meeting at Butterfield, Saturday night.

Mrs. Elmer Tucker and children of near Exeter visited her parents Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Davidson and family her last week.

Mrs. Sarah Powell of near Exeter, visited her brother J. M. Davidson and family last week.

D. D. Bayless who was included in the draft from this township, enlisted in the Medical Corp at Springfield last week.

Neighboring Towns

Mr. and Mrs. John A. Ford, highly respected citizens of Rocky Comfort, went to Springdale, Ark., on the 4th, where they celebrated their golden wedding at the home of their daughter, Mrs. Kate McKeown.

Mrs. Ione Townsley of Golden, visited her sister, Mrs. Tucker, at Eureka Springs, Ark., recently.

Tuesday, Aug 10, was the 56th anniversary of the battle of Wilson Creek, near Springfield.

For killing Ralph Lucas and Geo. Kincannon near Granby, recently, John Cole of Granby, was held at his preliminary and it was said by the Neosho Times that he would give bond.

Miss Violet Davenport of Eureka Springs, Ark., is visiting her sister, Mrs. Clarence Antle at Tulsa, Okla. This is some of the Barry County Antle family.

J. B. Varner and wife of Granby, Robert Varner and wife of Picher, Okla., and Mrs. Jane Paul of Carthage, motored down to Washburn Prairie last week, and visited Wm. Varner and other relatives. J. B. Varner and Wm. Varner are bothers.

Washburn And Greasy Creek Mixups - by: Irvin Whittaker

Clarence Cline and Ora Scott, Ash township youngsters were married Saturday by Squire Roller at his residence.

Billy Hancock estimates that he will have two car loads of merchantable apples.

Wm. Tennis, a good citizen and an old soldier died Saturday night from the infirmities of age. Interment made at Washburn Prairie cemetery, Sunday afternoon. Rev. P. H. Hodge conducting the service. A widow and a large family of grown children are left to mourn his loss.

Sam Woodruff has returned from a trip to Hugo, Okla., more firmly impressed with the future of Washburn Prairie and Greasy Creek than before. He is sure there is no peace that equals home.

Wm. Gowan had a load of hogs on this market Saturday.

Syd Clonz and family started for Ogden, Utah, Friday morning.

Mrs. D. G. Walton is visiting her friends at Gravette, Ark. She has recently arrived from California.

Phillip Oakley came in from Oklahoma to be with his brother Bill who is very sick on Mason's Ridge.

Albert Fielding is home from Oklahoma, on a visit. He passed the military examination, last week.

Rock Springs

Mrs. Sidney Henry was very sick last Sunday.

Mat Brewer and family, of the Pippin store, were visiting B.A. Gowan and Joe Gregory a day or so last week.

Mrs. J. C. Pippin is improving from a severe attack of paralysis.

Thurman Still has returned from Oklahoma, where he has been working.

Victor

The little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Siddall has been very sick but is some better.

Mrs. Noah Williams will soon return home from an extended visit with relative in Iowa.

Local And Personal

Charles Williamson, son of Fred Williamson, who is a member of the United States Marines stationed at Ft. Royal, S. C. is here on a visit to his relatives and friends. He is looking well and is pleased with the service. He is now serving his second enlistment.

The 2 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Homer Bayless, residing 3 1/2 miles northwest of town, died on the 9th. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. T. Brattin after which the remains were interred in the New Church cemetery on the 10th. The bereave parents have the sympathy of their many friends.

Miss Mildred Quinn, of LaRussell, is suffering with typhoid fever. She is a daughter of Dr. G. D. Quinn formerly of Golden and is a granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Salyer.

Dallas Mason and daughter, Kathryn, of Saint Louis, visited relatives here on the 10th.

Miss Louise Landis is visiting her brother, Aubrey Landis, at Rolla.

Probate Court

Judge C. M. Landis, of the Probate Court, held an adjoined term this week and transacted considerable business.

A report of the sale of real estate in the estate of Alex Rosewicz to Joe Rosewciz for $? was approved.

An order for the sale of real estate in the estate of Lula Curry, a minor, war ordered.

Real estate of J. C. Barcus, dec'd was ordered sold.

Real estate of Estill D., Opal and Lorine Kring, minors, was order sold.

Semi-annual settlements of descendants: C.D. Pruhitt, John D. Barolin, Jas. F. Carlin, Martin Flaherty, D. N. Peters, H. M. Rhea, H. C. Osborn and John P. Sullivan.

Settlements were made in the following estate minors: Vincent Murphy, Eva, Troy and Mildred Richardson, Bernice McComas, Annie Malloy, Jos. W. Greathouse, Mary Exposite, Laura and Louise Rice.

Final Settlements were made in the estates of Fred and Marie Gurley, minors.

W. M. Haney was appointed administrator of B. Stringetten.
