April 2, 1904, Cassville Democrat, Barry Co., MO Flat Creek New: B. F. Carney closed a very successful term of school at the Carney school house the 23rd. Frank is a nice young man and he showed the people that he was a school teacher. Success to him. Pioneer News: Miss Etta McCollum who is teaching at Ergo spent a few days with friends at this place last week. Jed Carlin and W. D. Coward of Purdy attended the Republican State Convention at Kansas City last week. Mark Abernathy is recovering from a siege of lagrippe. Wm Beck and family living east of town left Saturday morning for Idaho. H. C. Dodson and Miss Clevie Brixey were married Saturday at the residence of the bride's parents 3 1/4 miles out on the Washburn road. Mrs. Dodson is a daughter of G. A. Brixey, an old and respected citizen of this county and is a splendid lady. Mr. Dodson has taught school in the county for a number of years and has made a success of all his schools. Success to them. Married by Rev. J. T. Brattin at his residence, Monday evening, March 28, Wallace Chenoweth of Rocky Comfort and Miss Sarah G. Duncan of Liberty twp. They were accompanied by Miss Harrell and Arthur Duncan. This happy couple are both members of excellent families an we bespeak for them a long life of happiness and pleasure. They left on Tuesday morning train for Little Rock, Ark., to visit relatives and friends a few days.

April 9, 1904, Cassville Democrat, Barry Co., MO In our announcement column will be found the announcement of W. D. McMillen of Capps Creek township as a candidate for assessor, subject to the action of the Democratic party. Mr. McMillen comes highly recommended by those having the pleasure of his acquaintance and we believe would make a good officer. Should be receive the nominations he will have our hearty support. Miss Almarinda Boucher died Tuesday, April 5th, near Talpa, Lawrence County, aged 49 years. She was a sister of Mrs. W. F. Brite and a cousin of Mrs. Prof. Pendergraft of this city. Mrs. Brite has been with here sister for several weeks. W. F. Brite and daughters, Misses Grave and Blanche went there Wednesday to attend the funeral Thursday. She was a member of the C. P. Church. Charlie Beaver allowed us the minutes of the 13th Annual Session of the Mt. Zion Association of United Baptist, held with the New Prospect Church. Benton County Ark., commencing on Friday before the 4th Sabbath in August, 1854 and following day, which was printed by Wm. Quesenbury of Fayetteville, Ark., in 1854. Elder J. F. Mitchell was Moderator and G. W. Ford, clerk. Elders Donagan, Brown, and Slover were prominent in the proceedings. They had $21.56 in the treasury, $3.95 Expense. Evan Daugherty represented the Washburn Church with 50 members. J. F. Mitchell, John Roller and H. Pendergraft represented the New Prospect Church with 45 members. Chas. Haddock, J. G. Castaw and W. C. Montgomery represented New Site with 93 members. He also has a copy of minutes of the association held Oct 12, 13, and 14, 1860 with Pond Spring Church, Benton County, Ark. The attendance on this meeting was not as large as the one mentioned above. Six churches were represented at this meeting while there was ten at the other. At this meeting it was resolved to unite with the body dropping the former name and the united Body be styled the Northwestern Arkansas Baptist Association. The association adjourned to meet with Antioch Baptist Church Friday before the first Sunday in October 1861 in Benton Co., Ark. Shady Grove: Bud Day's baby is slowly recovering. New Hope: Wm Garber is improving his farm by building a new fence. W. G. Hickman has extra fine Early Mitchell strawberry plants for sale at $1.00 per 1,000. A limited supply of Gandy's at $1.50 per 1,000. Lee Chapman, successor to Sterling Hailey, has an ad in today's Democrat. Go and patronize him when wanting a lunch, cold drinks, ice cream, etc. A nice, quiet place. Dan McCurry of Mountain View, Stone County, AR, a dealer in lead, zinc, marble, timber and farm lands was here Monday. He formerly resided at Harrison, AR. Marriage Licenses: James M. April 16, 1904, Cassville Democrat, Barry Co., MO Mrs. S. J. Vanzandt [Van Zandt] an old and respected citizen of Pasley was stricken with paralysis Monday. This is her second stroke and her many relatives and friends are extremely anxious about her. Henry Horine has secured an increase of pension for Wm. Henly of this city from $10. to $12. Also Albert Colburn of Washburn from $8. to $10. [Henley] Chas. Hutchens was arrested and paid a fine of $8.80 Saturday, for disturbing the peace of Seth Gaskins. Rev. John S. Stapleton will move to this city from Neosho as soon as the C. P. parsonage is completed. Rev. Ewing McCracken was called to Berryville, Ark., to preach the funeral of County Clerk J. O. Collier, who died April 8th, of rheumatism of the heart. Mr. Collier was a young man of great promise and had served the people of Carroll County four years as county clerk. We regret this untimely death. Constable Thos. Lumpkins and Jas. Beagle of Seligman were in town, Monday. They said the fruit crop in that section was alright up to that date. The snow Saturday morning was said to be three inches on a level. Rev. Carmichael representing the Missouri Orphans Home, took four of the Wheeler and Johnson children, Monday evening, and will secure homes for them. There is one more to go that could not be taken on account of being sick. Probate Court Proceedings: Estate of Nannie and Lula Wheeler, Virgil and Dell Johnson, minors; The Children's Home Society of Missouri was appointed guardian of said minors. Shell Knob News: Miss Alice Carr is the guest of her sister, Mrs. J. C. Snider. Monett News: Paul Attaway has a new boy baby. Monett News: J. E. Marbut, of the Wells Fargo Express Co., while handling a truck load of poultry, it turned over on him, fracturing on or two ribs. Monett News: Joe Jackson arrested two hard characters last week with all kinds keys and burglar's tools. Later on one of them confessed to robbing the post office at Schmit, MO, April 2nd and was taken to Springfield. They had been spending pennies very freely in buying beer. Lone Elm News: Green Bird is on the sick list and has been for some time. Grangeville News: W. A. Weaver will go to Brice Hudson's in a few days to build him a large barn. Pasley News: W. J. Brock of Shell Knob has been employed as principal of the Pasley school with Mrs. Emily Skelton assistant. Washburn Prairie News: Miss Myrtle Stubblefield of Pasley visited her sister Mrs. A. J. Hopkins of this place Monday. Washburn Prairie News: Mr. Pendergraft moved his saw mill to what is known as the John Burns place in Dry Hollow and will begin sawing this week. Shady Grove News: D. A. Utter and family, O. R. Boyer and wife, Mrs. Judge Utter and Misses Zelma carver and Gertie Twilligar attended the surprise dinner given C. J. Utter of near Sunrise. The dinner was in honor of his 60th birthday anniversary. He is a brother of the late Judge Utter. There was a large crowd present and all enjoyed themselves, vine eating and listening of the music furnished by friends. Bethel News: Rev. Ennes was 53 years old, April 6, he wished for a big turkey. Corsicana News: The family of John Blankenship has been tussling with the measles but are all better at present. Mrs. Helen Hobbs received a telephone call from Lou Perry of Monett, Sunday, stating that the baby was very sick with the measles. Mrs. Hobbs went there on the evening train. |
April 23, 1904, Cassville Democrat, Barry Co., MO Monday, April 14, 24 years ago, a very destructive this county, killed about 100 people at Marshfield and destroyed a large amount of property. Wheelin Combs of near Butterfield, deposited $1.00 on subscription Monday. He has been reading he Democrat for about 33 years. He is one of our oldest and respected citizens. Geo. Evans and his sister, Mrs. Fred Sills and Misses Mabel and Mary Evans and Bon Manley attended a minstrel show at Monett Tuesday night. Mrs. Grace Thompson will leave for Kansas City, tomorrow where she and George will reside in the future. Albert Townsend and family are visiting Mrs. Townsend's parents, J. J. Edens and family of near town. G. H. Cottrell of near town has gone to Guthrie Center, Io., to attend a daughter that is very sick. Concord News: Roy Packwood has retuned home from Valparaiso, Ind., where he has been attending school. Monett Times: Born to John Brown and lady a daughter. Oak Ridge News: Mr. and Mrs. Nobel Gregory are staying with the latter's mother, Aunt Lida Mills, who is not recovering as fast as her friends could wish. Purdy News: A baby girl arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Smallwood last Saturday morning. Sparks News: A Mr. Earle of Exeter we think has secured our school. Died, April 10, 1904, Thos. Lackey at his home 4 1/2 miles northwest of Granby, age 68 years. He had resided in Newton County for 30 odd years. In 1869 he married Miss M. M. Peevy, a daughter of the late Judge Isaac Peevy of near Washburn, and a sister of Mrs. B. F. McCary of near Washburn. The Granby Miner says he was an upright and honorable citizen, a good neighbor, kind friend, a loving and tender husband. Marriage Licenses: Robt. A. to the Cassville Democrat, Barry Co., MO Eagle Rock News: Mrs. Andy Bouyer of near this place was fearfully burned Wednesday. She was ironing before the fire place when her dress caught fire and she ran out in the yard. Mr. Bouyer was at the barn looking after his sock. He ran to her, stripped her of her clothing and in doing so badly burned his hands. His whiskers and hair were badly singed. Mrs. Bouyer died that night age 65 years. Eagle Rock News: W. H. Burris wife and six children have the measles. Washburn News: An infant child of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Sagard's of Joplin died last Tuesday of whooping cough and pneumonia. Mrs. Phillips of this place Mrs. Segard's mother attended the funeral. Washburn News: Mr. Dalton who was brought down from Buffalo, MO, a few days ago died the 12th, at the home of his son P. E. Dalton's, 5 miles west of town. New Hope News: Miss Effie Long of Purdy is making her home with her grandfather, Mr. Cooper. New Site News: Mrs. Margaret Russell and Leona Rumbaugh visited at Purdy Tuesday. Shady Grove News: Married at Butterfield by Rev. Parmley, Will Rausch and Miss Pitts. Success to them. Purdy News: Mrs. J. N. Skelton of Eagle Rock, is very sick at her daughters, Mrs. E. D. Cullup. |

Cassville Democrat, Barry Co., MO Lone Elm News: There will be a special school meeting, June 11, to select a site for the new school house. Purdy News: Manford Prevo got badly hurt last week, by his buggy being turned over caused by his horse getting scared at a train. Purdy News: Married, May 22, Marvin Allison, formerly of Exeter and Purdy, to Miss Pearl Harris of Dixon. We extend best wishes. New Hope News: J. W. Brooks has departed for the north. I guess he took his coat with him. Scholten News: Born to Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Williams Tuesday night a son. The case of State vs. J. W. Johnson, charged with felonious assault came up in Squire Freeland's court at this place Monday and for want of sufficient evidence the case was dismissed. Prosecuting Attorney Kemp for the state and E. C. Frost for the defendant. J. C. Barcus and William Day of this city are building a barn for Geo. Vandorn out on the Exeter road. On June 16, 1904, at Peoria, Ill., Geo. A. Hiles and Miss Josie Winkelmayer of that city, will be united in marriage. George formerly resided at Exeter and this city, and has many friends here that wish a bountiful supply of the good things of this life for himself and lady. |

Purdy News Items: S. B. Haddock and family have returned from a visit to Midland, Arkansas. Purdy News: Mrs. B. R. Gilbert and daughter are visiting relatives in Springfield. Washburn Prairie News Items: Miss Cora Lane and Albert Coward of Purdy, spent Sunday at this place. June 18, 1904, Cassville Democrat, Barry Co., MO Death carried away a highly respected and old citizen in the person of Dennis Barnett, at his home, in Liberty township, June 12, age 87 years, a few months, and days. He was the father of 13 children, all living but two. He had been a member of the Baptist Church nearly all his life. His remains were laid to rest in Concord Cemetery. His aged wife survives him. One day later his son, Bevy Barnett, aged about 50 years old died of typhoid fever, leaving a wife and five children to mourn his death. He was a member of the C. P. Church and a splendid citizen. His remains were interred tin the Chitwood Cemetery there to await the resurrection summons. Hiram Dummitt was tried at McDowell Saturday on a charge of attempting to assault a little 7 year old girl and was discharged. If the charge against Mr. Dummit was made through spite the guilty part should be given the limit of the law, as this is a most serious charge and might have caused the death of an innocent man through mob violence. Married June 15, 1904, at Exeter, by Squire Lauderdale, Edwin A. Lewis and Miss Flora B. Elzey of Monett. They were accompanied by Geo. Schofield, Miss May Davis of Monett. Mrs. Lewis is a daughter of Sam B. Elzey, a former citizen of this place. Mr. Lewis is a very popular young man. Success to them. The 10 months old babe of Mr. and Mrs. John McNally, died Sunday night. The bereaved have the sympathy of their many friends and their sad bereavement. Eagle Rock News Items: Calvin Skelton and family paid a visit to family and friends near Horner Saturday and Sunday. Mrs. Harry Truax of southwest City, died June 5, 1904. She was a daughter of the late Squire Brandenburg of Butterfield and resided in this city and Exeter several years ago. Chas. Sills will leave next week for the Indian Territory to sell fruit trees. Elijah Kelley died May 23, at Valeda, Labette Co., Kansas. He formerly resided in Roaring River township and at Exeter, this county. Wm. Hedrick came up from Kentucky, Thursday morning. Will and Phillip Henson of Golden, were here Tuesday. They said wheat cutting would commence there Wednesday. It is with sorrow that we chronicle the death of Mrs. Adam Sherwood of Verona in Kansas City, Sunday where she had gone for treatment. The remains were brought home and laid to rest in the Spring River Cemetery near Verona. A Mr. Patterson of Seligman, has the small pox and is under strict quarantine. He is a son of C. A. Patterson. Zim Utter's little son of Pierce City, stepped on a barbed wire and the barb was forced through his foot just back of his toes, one day this week. The Democrat said no serious results were expected. June 25, 1904, Cassville Democrat, Barry Co., MO Estate John H. McKoon, dec'd ordered that there be no administration Estate of J. M. Wasson, dec'd inventory and appraisement had and approved. Estate of Jas. M. Kinnett, dec'd, inventory and appraisement, filed and approved. Bond of John H. Saxe guardian for Eugene F. Saxe, minor, filed and approved. Bond of S. M. Campbell as administrator of estate Margaret J. Campbell field and approved. Elbert Eden, G. & C. for Effie Eden, showed that said ward had reached maturity and showed that he had balance of $211. due ward for which she received in open court. G. & C. sureties discharged. Estate of Geo. M. Goodnight, dec'd; Thos. M. Allen, admr., showed that there was no property other than that allowed the widow by law and it was ordered that there be no furthered administration and the admr. and sureties be discharged. Estate of A. J. Henderson, dec'd; admr., showed that $794.82 was on hands and prayed that a payment of all claims allowed against the estate be paid at 75 cents on the dollar. Court ordered that the executor pay 75 per cent of the 5th class demands allowed on said estate. Said executor also filed motion that the court compel it. P. Henderson formerly co-executor, to make final settlement. Court ordered that said E. P. Henderson appear before the court on Wednesday, the 10th day of August 1904 to make final settlement. Ordered that court adjourn to July 11, 1904. Gil Batten of Eureka Springs severely stabbed Lodge Antle in an altercation at Eureka Springs last Friday. It will be remembered that Betten killed a man in the auditorium several years ago for which he served a term in the penitentiary. Berryville Progress. Betten killed one of the Phillips boys of Golden, at Eureka Springs, some years ago. We suppose this Mr. Antle is Lodge Antle formerly of this county has many relatives in this county. Mrs. J. L. Dean of Wills Point, Texas, visited Mrs. Drury Wilkerson at Monett, last week. She formerly resided at Seligman. Monett Times. C. L. Dry, late assistant postmaster at Southwest City, will serve six months in the Newton County jail for embezzling $500., while in that position. Oakey Union Eppy Higgs has been keeping the neighbors awake singing to his new baby boy. Born to Eppy Higgs and wife, June 18, a son. Rocky Comfort Telegrams Dave Stansberry living 5 miles north of this place, died last week, of a lung trouble. Rock Springs Fred Roller of near Seligman, brother of J. A. and Jacob Roller, died the 13th. He had mumps about eighteen months ago, and a stomach trouble set up and he was never well again. He was 26 years, 1 month and 20 days old/. He leaves a wife and three children and a number of friends and relatives to mourn his death. House Furlon Freeze will teach the Gunter school this year, and Willie will have charge of the ranch while Furlon is gone. Ash News Allen Weathers has bought a new mower and has been cutting some grass. Steve Weathers was up from Garfield last week. We were glad to see Steve up again. John Cargile and family, Will Poe and wife, Harve Surrett visited H. A. Surrett Sunday. Cline and Poe will soon start their saw mill again. Mollie Cargile of McDonald County visited her father's family Sunday. Ash News This Week Mrs. Rona King, wife of Sam King, who resides near Pipin, Ark., about 4 miles from this place, and a niece of the late Warren Potts of this vicinity, is supposed to have committed suicide Tuesday night, June 14. A coroner's inquest was held over the body Wednesday morning, but nothing was found out. Later - Rogers, Ark., June 18. Sam King, residing near Garfield, this (Benton) county, is under arrest on the charge of having murdered his wife, Tuesday night. King and his wife fought Tuesday over some trivial difference and it is alleged that the fight resulted in King breaking her neck. The children, of which there are five, the youngest only 7 months old, witnessed the fight, and their testimony and the bruised condition of Mrs. King's body led tot he arrest of the husband. King was badly scratched in the fight. |
