Elbert Freeze Passes Away: When the spirit of Elbert Freeze took its flight at 12 o'clock Thursday, June 9, 1910, Barry County lost one of its best citizens. For almost a half century he had taken a prominent part in the affairs of the community where he lived and enjoyed the highest respect of the neighbors and friends as a man of moral worth and honest convictions. Elbert Freeze was a native of Tennessee being born in Greene County of that state November 27, 1843. With his parents he first came to Missouri in 1851. They moved to Kansas in 1857 and to Arkansas in 1858, where the family lived, when the Civil War occurred. He joined the Confederate Army and served during the war. He then located in this county and in January 1868, was united in marriage to Eliza Jane Hankins. They were blessed with a family of seven children all of whom are living. They are: Furlon of Cassville; Mrs. Josie Martin of Joplin; W. L. of Monett; Mrs. Mintie Gravett of Steerford, Canada; Mrs. Bertha Clark of Covina, Calif.; Emmett of Pierce City; and Curtis, yet with his parents. A wife and a brother Rev. W. M. Freeze of Greenville, Ill, and a sister, Mrs. Miranda J. Vaughan of Eugene Oregon, are also left to mourn his death. Mr. Freeze had been in poor health for several months but his condition was not thought to be critical. He passed away suddenly of heart trouble and other complications. He was a deacon of the Antioch Baptist church and had served his church as deacon since 1882. He was one of its most devoted members and will be greatly missed. The funeral services were conducted Friday at the Antioch Church by Revs. Chappell and M. Smith. In his death the church has lost a faithful member, his community one of its best Christina citizens and family a devoted and indulgent husband and father. |
