| I
have researched old Monett Times newspapers, so far from the years 1955 to
about 1961, I think.
In those old papers I
have transcribed information and submitted it to MOBARRY, such as
obituaries of some prominent
citizens, a news story about Corsicana from 1955, and church histories.
Those include Waldensian, Monett Baptist,
and St. John's Lutheran Church/Stones Prairie.
I have also submitted a few old school class photos and information
pertaining to them.
My main focus has been Barry County cemeteries. Although I've submitted a
few cremation memorials, and have
transcribed the Barry County burials listed in the King Funeral Home
Records of Aurora, Lawrence County, MO from
1901 to 1945, I prefer to be in the field, as they say.
I have completely
photographed, submitted, and have attempted to keep updated the following
cemeteries
for MOBARRY: Beaver, Bethel Baptist, Bowsher, Brock School, Burnett,
Christopher, Clay Hill, Doty, Epperly Memorial,
Eugene Gates, Goodnight, P.P. Henderson, IOOF-Monett, Kane, Keaton, Lake
Park Memorial Gardens, Leann, Longview,
Massey, McGuire, Metcalf, Mitchell Family, Mt. Pisgah, Pace, Phillips,
Pierce, Purdy, Samuel, St. John's Lutheran Church/
Stones Prairie-Older, St. John's Lutheran Church/Stones Prairie-Newer,
Stubblefield, Taggart's Royal Oak, Vance,
Waldensian, Williams, and Wormington. A friend, Doug Johnston, helped with
a few of those, by the way.
As far as I can tell, I have also either submitted photographs, obit
information, funeral home information, or aided in
the locating of the following cemeteries listed on the MOBARRY webpage:
Antioch, Basham Hill, Blankenship. Calton,
Old Carney, Clark, Clark Farm, Clio, Concord, Corinth, Creason, Crow Pond,
Old Easley, Gunter, Hale, Hilton, Hudson,
Liberty, Maddy, Mars Hill, McDowell Mill, McKinney, Mount Pleasant, Muncie
Chapel, New Liberty-King's Prairie,
Oak Hill, Oak Ridge, Osa, Painter, Pilant, Potter, Quaker, Roach, Rocky
Comfort-Prosperity Baptist, Sparks, Stinnett,
St. Peter & St. Paul, Old Stubblefield, Viola, and Yearns. There may be a
couple more, but I didn't have the energy to
investigate any further.
Also, I have been involved in the Barry County Genealogical & Historical
Society and their Cemetery Preservation and
Restoration Committee. Although my schedule is difficult, I have been
involved, to a certain degree, in the clearing of
brush, and resetting of repaired gravestones in the following cemeteries:
Corsicana, Ferguson, Henry Hadley,
John Hadley, Higgs, Packwood, and Purdy.
My brother and I have been doing family history research for many, many
years now. A lot of the information we've
been able to obtain was due to the hard work and diligence of total
strangers that weren't even related. Since I moved
to this area, I've tried to pay those favors forward and help others in
the same situation. My occupation requires
me to drive all over the county, and I've found that I'm able to devote
the most of my MOBARRY time to cemetery work.
Also, with Donna Cooper as coordinator, I can rest assured that any
information I submit will be transferred to
MOBARRY in a timely manner and not lost or misplaced or just plain
rejected.
Lastly, when I was a child, I didn't want to be a fireman or policeman or
President of the United States. I wanted to
be an archaeologist. I think that the research that I've found and
submitted has become an offshoot of that childhood
fantasy. I CAN be Indiana Jones, albeit only part-time.
