New Site Quilt Barry Co., MO

Some ladies at the New Site Church made this quilt in 1894

Betty Lamberson shared this story with us, which was edited for the web site:

This quilt has quite a story!

The picture shown was taken by Ralph and Betty Lamberson and is on the fence at our farm.

Ralph and I found this quilt crumpled in a pile in a flea market booth in Ozark a few years ago, as a quilt collector and historian, I could not pass it up as it said Monett on it and it was my favorite pattern, (feathered star) and color (red). I could not bear the thought of someone making teddy bears out of it!

We bought the quilt! I took it to show to my mother, Marguerite Decocq, who then told us that New Site was a small church west of Monett, one that she remembered playing the piano years ago at a special service. Ralph and I went over there, found the cemetery and found virtually every name on the headstones, we were so excited! We felt we were in the middle of the New Site quilting group! We photographed every stone that had an association to the quilt. We kept the quilt for quite a while - enjoying the history.

I began to think that this quilt should be returned to some of the members of this church or family whose name was on it. As we felt it was a valuable historical piece and our daughters would not have any connection to it.

We made several attempts to contact someone in the New Site Church - to no avail - we found no interest. Finally one day we got hold of Sandy and so we sent her a picture - maybe this one? And within a few days we heard from her. She and her husband came over to look at the quilt and they bought it.

Sandy will have to take the story from here.

In fact I have often wondered what became of it? Whether or not the New Site ladies of today had seen the quilt of their grandmothers?

One wonders how it ended up in a flea market in Ozark?
