NOTES: He preferred to be called Sherman. He became blind as a young man when after spending a lot of time in the hot sun, plowing fields, the heat overcame him and he passed out. He fell backwards, facing up, with his eyes opened. The intense sun burned his retinas, causing blindness. Some years later, he had to have both eyes removed when they became diseased. He walked to the Doctor's house one morning, had one eye removed, the surgery taking place on the kitchen table. He stayed overnight and walked home the next day. The following week, he walked back to the doctor's house, had the other eye removed, stayed overnight and walked back home again with some help. That is why he wore aviator goggles.
He is buried in Shelton Cemetery, Bollinger County, Missouri.
