Boone County Missouri 1830 Census Transcription

This is a work in progress transcription of the Boone County Missouri 1830 U.S. census (the 5th U.S. census). If you notice problems in transcription or presentation please contact Preston Sights at cc@bocomo.org.

We have chosen the HTML table format to present the 1830 census data. In general it is harder to copy infomation from a table than from other HTML formats. The detraction is it is harder for the researcher to copy the information into their records when they find some important information. A side benefit, is it is harder for someone to copy the entire database and take the work as their own. We are not really happy with the end result, but think it is a happy medium. Your comments are always welcome.

As for the count information, the column headings take up too much room to include them in the table. So I will detail them here. For the white population counts, there are 13 divisions each for the males and females with age divisions from the left to right being youngest to oldest, with the age divisions being: under 5, 5-10, 10-15, 15-20, 20-30, 30-40, 40-50, 50-60, 60-70, 80-90, 90-100, and 100+. For example, the count entry we might show in the table below : 1-2-0-4-0-1-0-0-0-0-0-0-0 would indicate 1 child under 5, 2 children between 5 and 10, 4 children between 15 and 20, and finally one adult between 30 and 40. For the non-white population, there are only 6 divisions in each category (which are slaves male, slaves female, free colored male, and free colored female). The divisions for non-whites are under 10, 10-24, 24-36, 36-55, 55-100, 100+. The divisions for the disabled are additional information for those already counted in the previous divisions. For the white population, they have 3 age divisions for deaf and dumb; under 14, 14-25, and 25+. There are separate divisions in the white section for blind and for "aliens - foreigners not naturalized". The section for non-whites is similar, except there is no column for aliens.

The "free colored" and disabled columns have so infrequent an entry, that they are left blank instead of filling them with zeros for ease of reading.

Additional editors notes. Occationally when we believe the persons name was mispelled by the original census taker, we will include what we believe is the persons name in ( ). When we are confused or uncertain on the interpretation of a certain spelling you may see ?? and a second alternative spelling following.
