About this project:
The goal of this project is to locate and preserve as much original information that
is located on the tombstones in Boone County Missouri that is possible. Since early settlers
frequently buried their kin in small family plots, it is a significant task just to locate
these family plots, especially since urban growth and the ravages of time frequently destroys
these scattered burial grounds.
Along with transcription of these aging stones, this project also is taking a
photographic record of the stones. The recent advances in digital cameras greatly
simplifies the process and it preserves the flavor of the stone as well as the
information.
The Internet provides the perfect media to distribute the transcriptions and
pictures using the graphically oriented web browser. This gives the researcher
of the future the ability to locate and obtain a representation of their
ancestors tombstones, all without having to travel from the comfort of their
easy chair in the den.
Volunteers:
Given that there are over 200 cemeteries and family
plots in Boone County Missouri, this will take several
years to complete this project, even with assistance.
Your assistance is essential in the timely completion
of this project. Please
review the information on this page
to see how this project is being organized and how you can
help.
Neighboring counties:
As many residents had family in neighboring counties or lived
near a county line, they may be been buried across county lines.
Of course our work on listing cemeteries is not unique.
So you might consider visiting these other links to see if they
can be of assistance in locating your missing relatives.
Callaway:
USGenWeb Cemetery project : Callaway cemetery page
The county site for Callaway
has quite a bit of information for review,
and a very nice cemetery location map
that is worth examination.
Index of Cemeteries:
This section will provide an index of known cemeteries in Boone County Missouri.
At this time we only have detail information on a few cemeteries. We are
working with GSCM who has an active project to locate and begin preservation efforts
(where possible) on these aging items of Boone County history. If you have
transcriptions of any of these cemeteries, you must have copyright rights for me
to be able to put them up. We cannot take other transcriptions without their
permission.
Where did this list come from?? Three sources have been used to construct this
list. First and foremost is the work done by Nelda McCrory.
The Cemeteries of Boone County Missouri was published in September of 1995
by Ms. McCrory for the Cemetery Location Project of the Missouri State Genealogical
Association. It lists 239 entries with their location and directions on how to
find them. Another major compiliation is the Information on the location of
some Cemeteries in Boone County Missouri compiled by Roger D. Harting in 1991
which indexes "only" 193. Let me be clear here. This is a TREMENDOUS amount of work
these two have done. Finally, I have used the
USGS feature location
database which only has 38 entries (at this writing), complete with spelling errors,
but does give access to Tiger Map plots and satellite imagery from Terraserver,
which are nice.
GSCM is currently building on these lists
and is compiling the best list to date of Boone County cemeteries and burial plots.
PLEASE remember if you intend to visit any of these locations,
that many are on "private" ground and you are intruding and trespassing while
visiting. We will be gathering all the information available from the site, so if
the land owners do not wish visitors, please honor their wishes.
There are transcriptions for some of the cemeteries we don't have
permission to reproduce here. When we get the time we will do our own
survey and make that available. Until then, we will note the listings
with a trans(#) entry in the Status column where the # corresponds to
the index of the list below:
1) Tombstone Transcriptions of Boone County Missouri Volume I, Floyd H. Strader, 1981
2) Tombstone Transcriptions of Boone County Missouri Volume II, Floyd H. Strader, 1982
3) Tombstone Transcriptions of Boone County Missouri Volume III, Floyd H. Strader, 1996
4) Tombstone Records of Boone County Missouri, Mrs. E.E. Evans, 1933,1992 (warning - before 1860 only)
5) Red Top Christian Church 175 Anniv 1822-1997, Bobby Bedsworth, 1997

Map:
When I first started this project I had the impression there was only a
few dozen cemeteries in Boone County. I used the USGS map service and combined
their maps into a composite map of Boone county. I have since learned that the
number of cemeteries and family plots exceeds 200. Needless to say, this map
would be unreadable with 200 dots on it. Still, since it lists the major
cemeteries, and for that reason it still serves a purpose (plus I spent a few
hours of editing to put it together!) so I have included it here for your review.
Preservation:
The goal of this project is to locate and preserve as much original information that
is located on the tombstones in Boone County Missouri that is possible. Since early settlers
frequently buried their kin in small family plots, it is a significant task just to locate
these family plots, especially since urban growth and the ravages of time frequently destroys
these scattered burial grounds.
Preservation is so very important. In 1999 I found out about a sad event
in Sullivan County Missouri (Northern central portion of the state).
Apparently someone decided to knock down, damage or
destroy a majority of the headstones in this cemetery.
Whoever did this showed no respect for those who helped pioneer this
country and state. Through our respect to these tough individuals by
taking care of the memorials to them in the cemeteries scattered around
the county we can show our youth we do care, and so should they.
Unfortunatly this is not an single event. This sort of thing
happens all to frequently.
Let's make sure this does not happen here in Boone County!
