Thomas Kinchen NANCE FAMILY


Thomas Kinchen Nance was born about. 1837 in Ashville, NC and died before 1862 in the Union Army.  His parents were Thomas Nance, b. about 1801 in NC d. July 27, 1879 on Independence, AR. and Nancy Ivey b. Jan. 4, 1822 in Randolph Co., NC    The family moved to TN between 1855 and 1839, and later to Cape  Girardeau Co., MO.  A few years later they migrated to Ten Mile Creek, Butler Co. as shown in the 1960   Census.

Thomas Kinchen  married Nancy Kearbey May 15, 1859, however never got to see his son Pleasant Thomas Nance born Feb. 12, 1862 on Ten Mile (Halloran) d. August 15, 1940 in Poplar Bluff, MO
His mother then married  John Grilla Kirk, and of this union there was born Monroe and Jasper Kirk.   

Pleasant Thomas Nance (P. T. or Pete) as many called him was a successful farmer, owned and operated a sawmill and blacksmith shop and  was a Postmaster.    His first wife was of the Harmon family, and died early.  His second wife was Matilda Doyle from Ellsinore and became the parents of four children, Carrie, b. December 5, 1888, d. June 21, 1967 at Charleston Host Home, Emmie Artemises b.  March 19,1890, J. L. Nance, Jan 20, 1892 died in infancy and Robert George Nance  b. May 21, 1895,a veteran of WW 1 died in Veterans Hospital in Outwood, KY March 3, 1939.   Carrie married John Edmund Hogg  Sept 3, 1905.  Emma married Fred Akin in 1913 and they lived in Newbern, TN.  Robert never got married.

Matilda Doyle was born about 1872 and died  about  1896.  She and Pleasant Thomas were married on Christmas day 1887, in Epps Township by Charles Crowley, M.G., with Matilda's father, A. J. Doyle, giving written consent.

After the death of Matilda, P. T. married Pearly Elvira Roberson  and they had four children, three to adulthood, Ruthie Belle Bumpus,  Cora Edith Wilson and Ada Ellen Bock.   A few years later he moved to Poplar Bluff and started a grocery business in a store he and John Sparkman built on North Broadwy by the Frisco tracks, which building still stand (2004).  His  last business in that area was a used furniture store.
