CARTER COUNTY QUERIES FOR APRIL 1998 THROUGH JUNE 1998

SURNAMES: HENDERSON/MARKHAM
My 3rd gr. grandmother, Mary Ann HENDERSON, married Robt. M. MARKHAM in St. Francois Co., Mo. in 1851. They were residing in Carter Co., Mo. in the 1860 census. Children: Catherine, Jackson, Wm. J., Lucinda, Samuel, ?Jina?. They were still living in 1870 as they are mentioned in the James HENDERSON property settlement in St. Francois Co. Cannot find them in Carter Co. after 1860 or in any other Missouri county. Does anyone have any information on them? Thanks!

PORTER, Effie Ann, born July 7, 1882, Farragut, Iowa, Daughter of William Henry FOSTER and Martha Ann ROBY. Effie PORTER (sometimes known as Eva) previously married to August BUICK. Believe she was legally married to C. Eugene PORTER, however, date and place are unknown at this time. The PORTERS arrived in Carter County in late 1913 or late 1914 where PORTER purchased 10 acres of land near Hunter, MO. Effie PORTER died January 8, 1917 and is buried at Hunter, MO. Jefferson City states there is no death record on file there. Effie PORTER's children were Harold BUICK, Russell PORTER, Clifford PORTER, Hattie PORTER, and Lawrence PORTER. Effie PORTER was my husband's grandmother. Understand that Mr. Porter was employed for a time with Munger Land Development Co. Trying to piece this puzzle together on a genealogy project for our children. MASSIE, Lewis, b. 17 Dec 1797 Virginia, d. 1888 Carter Co., Missouri, m. Sarah Sallie MACKLEY 20 Nov 1829, believe in Jackson Co., Ohio. Lewis moved to Missouri after the death of his wife. They had 10 children all born in Ohio, but know that two sons moved to Missouri when Lewis did. They are Anderson, b. 1830 Ohio, m. Artamissa COPELAND 23 Feb. 1879 and Vincent, b. 1848 Ohio, d. Carter Co., Missouri, m. Mary Jane WILSON. Would like to know if Lewis left a will in Carter Co. and where he is buried. Lewis is my G.G.G.Grandfather. Looking for information on Lemuel Ross LEWIS, born 27 May 1873 in Wayne County, Missouri. He married 1st Cusic Atrice HANNERS. Married 2nd Malinda KEITHLY. Married 3rd Elisha (Unknown). He had a half brother named Samuel LEWIS. Any information on the children of Samuel LEWIS would also be appreciated. He had four children Asa, Tony, Will and Nola. Nola married (Unknown) CHURCH and had one son named Cecil. Lemuel had a son also named Lemuel by this third wife. Lemuel and his 1st wife were married in Carter county. They had 7 children born in Ripley county. I don't know where Lemuel married his 2nd or 3rd wives. Or where his son, Lemuel, was born.

Arthur Gilbreth LOONEY is connected to McGUIRE family, he is father of Elizabeth LOONEY, Jesse Calvin McGUIRE's wife. Interested in this family, also. Albert BROOKS married Emeline HOOPER in 1884 - he died 12 March 1889 near Van Buren. Anything on him would be of tremendous help.

I am researching information regarding my great grandparents that lived in Carter County in 1909-1912. Clara Ada and Lewis(Louis) JAMES lived there with their two children, Orval and Bertie JAMES. There was a accident with Clara shooting another woman that was having an affair with Clara's husband, Lewis and her also shooting two men that broke into her home. I was wondering if there might have been any newspapers back in that part of the state at this time period? Lewis also worked for the railroad at the time, I was wondering how I can obtain records of him being an engineer for the local railroad. Would like to find ancestors of Frank MEYERS b 1885 d 1972, son of Seralda ROBERTSON,MEYERS, Mckinney b 1851 d 1933 and Peter MEYERS b 1832? d ?. He is buried in Robertson Cemetery near Ellsinore. His nephew James William{Willie} MORLAN b 1901, my dad's 1/2 brother, is also buried there with his wife Rachel. These families were in Ripley and Carter Co's before the Civil war. Frank had sisters Cora and Elizabeth who married L.S. BARRETT, both died by 1912 in Oklahoma. Brothers Willie died 1899, Henry b 1880. Frank was living on Nickey St. in Poplar Bluff when he died.His wife Minnie b 1897 d 1984. Would like to exchange info with these families. Thanks, Sam & Barbara Barrett.

The first time I used the internt to search for my PYEATT family, I found them on the 1910 Carter County MO. Census (Johnson Township Dist. 14) This is what I know PYEATT Gabril W. (Washington Byrd)-33 and Mary A. (Azalee "MCKINNEY)- 30. Gabril, Mary and their 5 sons were on the 1910 Census. I do not have marriage records, or birth info. on either but I've been told Mary Asalee (McKinney) Pyeatt was from Ripley Co. I also believe that Gabril Washington Byrd Pyeatt's father was William Pyeatt and mother Dianna (?) from St. Genevieve or Jefferson Co. MO.
