Photos I took of the Chorette Cemetery in Bates County in the summer of 2001. The cemetery is on private property near the Marais des Cygnes River and is not protected or maintained at all. The photos below show the locations of the grave stones after we located them and put some of them back upright again.
Some of my ancestors are buried there: my g-g-g-grandfather Jean Baptiste Chorette (1799-1850), the builder of the first mill on the Marais des Cygnes in 1839, his wife Elizabeth, and their daughter Rosalie, my g-g-grandmother. We believe the cemetery is of historical interest, but we came up empty when we tried to get the Bates County and Papinville Historical Societies involved in preservation and maintenance of the cemetery.
All my family live out of the area so we're unable to volunteer time to restore the cemetery, but we're each willing and able to help fund restoration and maintenance. We just don't know how to do it, so we'd appreciate any ideas or help anyone can offer. Jeff Bailey
