PURVIS CEMETERY
Sumner, MO

This old cemetery is located along the Burlington Railroad just northeast of Sumner, extending
from North Ash St. The cemetery was established in 1863, with all the burials in the 1800s
except Thomas Purvis who was buried there in 1924.  As with most “forgotten” cemeteries,
it is overgrown with grass, weeds, and brambles.  Vandalism over the years is obvious with
tombstones overturned, some never located, or some simply buried due to time and neglect.
The centennial anniversary of this cemetery prompted the Project of the Restoration of
Purvis Cemetery by the Community Betterment Committee of Sumner.  Volunteer work and
contributions were instrumental in preserving what is there today.  The earliest list of
tombstone inscriptions was that compiled by Irwin Williams about 1935.
