A TOKEN OF RESPECT

Mrs. Jane Smith, the wife of Alexander Smith, died April 19th, She was born in 1804 and married in 1825, In the fall of 1830, moved to Randolph Co. and from there to Chariton Co. where she has resided ever since, seeing her posterity to the third generation. For 64 years she was a member of the Baptist Church.

Some of her.... who put their trust in God. In her last hours she reached her hand up as if trying to get something, and being asked what she had seen, she said "Myra and her brother". They are her children that had passed away several years ago.

She was respected by the community in which she lived. She was 82 years of age, leaves a husband and seven children to mourn her loss, but they mourn not those who have no hope. Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord. Their sorrows are ended, the battle has been fought, and the victory won. The remains of the deceased were interred in the Bee Branch (Fitzgerald Cem.) Graveyard. A goodly number of her acquaintances were in attendance, both at the house and at the grave. The funeral was conducted by Rev. James Hise and an appropriate prayer was offered which seemed to impress many with sorrow to think they had been called to pay the last tribute of respect to their sister, and they too must soon, like her, be laid in the tomb.

Laid she every burden down

Passed over to the brighter shore,

To wear in heaven a crown.

Notes for ALEXANDER J. SMITH:

Alexander J. Smith and Jane Rice Bricken were both born in KY. He was born in Barron Co., KY 22 June 1798, the son of Isaac and Martha Smith. Jane was born in Adair Co., KY, the daughter of William Anderson and Elizabeth (Hardwick) Bricken on 17 Jan 1804. Alex and Jane were married in 1825. Sons Benjamin and Isaac were born in Green Co., KY.

In the fall of 1830 they moved to Randolph Co., MO. Shortly afterwards Mr. Smith entered a claim to a tract of Government land 12 miles north of the present town of Salisbury. The Smiths were among the very first settlers in that part of Chariton Co. Bee Branch Sect #2, now Cockrell Twp. They continued to reside there until their deaths.

Alexander Smith was one of the honored and influential citizens of the county, serving for 25 years in the office of Justice of the Peace. He also gave effective service in the office of deputy sheriff. His five sons were gallant soldiers of the Confederacy during the War between the States.

George served under General Sterling Price. Both Alex and Jane were Baptists in religious faith.

Both are buried in the Fitzgerald Cemetery near their home.

Notes for FERDINAND ISAIAH BAILEY:

Ferdinand and Myra farmed in the Mountain Grove area but as the result of a bankruptcy moved to Tarkio, Atchison Co., Mo. where he worked on a ranch and she cooked until they paid off the debt and then they returned to Mountain Grove. The time frame appears to have been the 1905 to 1908 period. Arthur apparently went with them and taught school in either Northboro, Ia. or Westboro, Mo. From conversations with Arthur Reberry in March 1999.

Ferdinand and Myra died at Octavia's home in Springfield, Mo.

Mrs. Lucy M. Collet, 84 years old, Died Tuesday.

Mrs Lucy M. Collet, Mother of J. A. Collet of this place died at the home of her son, E. H. Collet, near Brunswick Tuesday night at 9:30 following an illness of about six weeks, due to cancer of the stomach.

Funeral services were held Thursday morning at 11 o'clock at Mt. Zion Baptist Church west of Bynumville, of which deceased had been a member for more than half a century. The services were conducted by Rev. B. F. Heaton, pastor of the Baptist church here. Four sons and four daughters survive her and all were here except W. A. Collet of Minco, Oklahoma.

Lucy M. Smith was born on a farm near Bynumville June 16, 1838, and spent all her life with the exception of a few years, in this county. She was married to John R. Collet December 22, 1855. Her husband died on their wedding anniversary, Dec. 22 ,1902. Of her family there survive eight children: W. A. Collet of Minco, OK,; B. R. Collet of Keytsville; E. H. Collet of Brunswick; and J. A. Collet of this place; Mrs M. F. Decker, New Cambria; Mrs. L. M. Kimrey, Pawnee, OK; Mrs. R. J. Owens, Keytesville; and Mrs. Wm. Moxley, Howard Co. There are 36 grandchildren and 32 Great Grandchildren.

Mr. George Smith the son of Thomas Icasia Smith and Laura Wooldridge Smith "was born14 Dec 1876.

Mr. Smith was married to Janie May Richmond August 28, 1910, and to this union two children were born, a boy and a girl.

A number of years ago he was converted in a union meeting at Downer School House and united with the Baptist Church. Bro. George lived an honorable, upright, Christian life, and has gone to that land, cut by no wintery blast, appalled by no hurling tempest, to wait at the harbor of the wing sheltered bay of God's everlasting love for his loved ones.

Funeral services were conducted by the writer at Mt. Zion Church Monday at 11:00 o'clock in the presence of his multitude of friends.

Interment took place at the Johnson Cem."
