By James Curts (jimcurts@sound.net): I have not edited any information. My comments are in Italics. These are taken off of hand written index records which obviously means I could have the spelling incorrect. In all cases I have entered the full name that was on the marriage records.

III, this book), when Joseph Marie deeded a tract of land described by survey to Asa Morgan. Joseph Marie settled upon said land in the year 1800, where he made improvements. This land was situated near what is known as “Eagle’s Nest,” about one mile southwest of where Fort Kincaid was afterwards erected, in what is now Franklin Township. In 1800, Charels Dehault Delassus, lieutenant-governor of Upper Louisiana, granted Ira P. Nash a large tract of land in the present limits of Howard county. This land was surveyed on the 26th of January, 1804, and certified to on the 15th day of February, of that year.” Page 113 First Deed Recorded “The following was the first deed placed on record in Howard county:-- Know all men by these presents that I, Joseph Marie, of the county and town of St. Charles, and territory of Missouri, have this day given, granted, bargained, sold and possession delivered unto Asa Morgan, of the county of Howard, and territory aforesaid, all the right, title, claim, interest, and property that I the said Joseph Marie have or may possess or am in anywise legally or equitably entitled to in a certain settlement right on the north side of the Missouri river, in the aforesaid county of Howard, near a certain place known and called by the name of Eagle’s Nest, and lying about one mile, a litle west of south from Kincaid’s Fort, in the said county of Howard, which said settlement was made by me sometime in the year 1800, for and consideration of value by me received, the receipt whereof, is hereby acknowledged, and him the said Asa Morgan all the claims and interest which I might be entitled to either in law or equity from the aforesaid improvement or settlement right, together with all and singular, all the appurtenances unto the same belonging, or in anywise appertaining to have and to hold free from me, or any person claiming by or through me. In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal, the 13th day of April, 1816. Signed, sealed and delivered in presence of Urh. I. Devore, A. Wilson.” Page 530-531 “ On the same date October 10, 1861, a third company, which was raised in the neighborhood of the present town of Salisbury, was enlisted in the State Guards. This is Company B:” S. Morgan is Listed as a private Page ? 555 “ In this connection, we give below the names of a number of old settlers, who located in Chariton County between the years 1818 and 1833. The list embraces 205 names.” E. Morgan is listed Page 836-837 S. P. Morgan “S.P. Morgan dealer in general merchandise and groceries, at Forest Green. Sterling Price Morgan is a representative of one of the pioneer families of Chariton. His grandfather settled in this county during the second decade of the present century, and his father, James Morgan, was principally reared in the county, being but six years of age when brought here by his parents. James Morgan, after he grew up, became an Indian trader, carrying on his business here with the Indians until their removal to Mercer County. There he followed them and kept up his business with them for a number years. He then returned and spent the remainder of his days in Chariton County. When a young man he was married to Miss Malinda Vinson, of this county, but originally of Tennessee. He himself was from North Carolina. Of this union the subject of the present sketch, Sterling Price Morgan, was born on the 2d of August, 1836. Sterling was reared to a farm life, and after he became of age he continued it without interruption until the establishment of his present business. However, he still carries on his farming interests. He has a good place of 150 acres, about two-thirds of which is under fence and otherwise substantially improved. For a number of years he has also been engaged in buying, feeding and shipping hogs, but more particularly in buying and shipping. In this he has been satisfactorily successful. In January, 1883, Mr. Morgan built a business house in Forest Green and established himself here in the general merchandise and grocery lines, opening out a large and well selected stock in these lines. The results have more than justified his expectations. A substantial and increasing custom has already been built up, and every month gives additional proof that his business is secure from all doubts as to its success. With the advantages of Forest Green as a local trade centre, and with his own determination to so conduct his store that it will meet with popular favor, it can hardly fail of becoming one of the leading business houses of this part of the county. The experimental year is now virtually past, and with more than expected success. It has been said that Mr. Morgan was engaged in farming “without interruption” up to the time of engaging in business at Forest Green. This statement requires one qualification. During the war he spent four years of gallant service in the Confederate army, fighting for what he, in common with a third of the people of the Union, believed to be the patriotic principles of the Declaration of Independence. Among other engagements, he participated in those of Boonville, Warrensburg, Lexington, Springfield, Dry Wood, Pea Ridge, Bentonville and Lone Jack. In the early part of 1864, though still a soldier, he was wise enough to remember and act the great truth so beautifully poetized by Bryant:-- “If man come not to gather The roses where they stand, They fade among the foliage, They cannot seek his hand.” Accordingly, on the 24th of February, 1864, he came to gather his particular rose, and Miss Mahala Barnes became his wife. They have two children, William and Earle.”
